While most international prospects are 16 or 17 years old when they sign, occasionally an outlier appears and develops into an intriguing prospect. Such is the case with Dotel, who signed close to the end of the 2019-2020 international signing period, joining the organization in October 2020 for $65,000 at age 18. He came stateside in 2021 to make his pro debut and has made slow, albeit inconsistent, progress up the ladder, though he was still young for his level at age 22 in Double-A in 2025.
The 6-foot-3 Dotel has a variety of options to go after hitters. He has two different fastball shapes, with his four-seamer, which averages 96 mph and touches the upper 90s, as his primary option as it shows some ride up in the zone. He can also use a two-seamer down in the zone. His slider has cutter-like action to it, a hard mid-80s breaker with three-quarter tilt that can miss bats. He’s still developing a low-80s splitter that can flash fade, but is still inconsistent.
Dotel’s strike-throwing was much improved in 2025, but he still carries a career 4.5 walk per nine rate with him. That, along with refining that offspeed pitch to keep hitters -- lefties in particular -- off his fastball will determine if he can start long-term or will be better suited to a bullpen role.
