McCoy spent his first two collegiate seasons at Illinois Central Community College before transferring to Iowa as a junior and going unselected in the Draft. He excelled that summer while playing in the Northwoods collegiate summer league, earning MVP honors and breaking the league record for hits (111), and then built on that performance as a senior by slashing .328/.394/.474. Impressed with McCoy's progress and all-around skills, the Orioles made him their sixth-round pick in 2017. After a solid first full season at Class A Delmarva, McCoy got off to a hot start in 2019 at Class A Advanced Frederick, earning a promotion to Double-A just a month into the season.
McCoy can do a little bit of everything on the field, most notably hit for average while offering plus defense at shortstop. He's fundamentally sound there, showing good range, soft hands and a strong arm, as well as consistency that has long impressed evaluators. At the plate, McCoy offers little in the way of power but has a disciplined approach and good feel for hitting to all fields.
The Orioles liken McCoy's abilities to those of former big league shortstops Walt Weiss and Mike Bordick, players who stood out for their sum of all parts rather than specific tools. With further development, McCoy could reach the Major Leagues in a utility infielder role.
