Garcia has bounced between starting and relief roles during his days in college and the pros and looks finally settled into the bullpen for good. He had three uneven years at Quinnipiac before moving to relief as a Texas A&M transfer. His move to the SEC helped him go to the Mariners in the 11th round of the 2023 Draft, and Seattle initially let him start again in his first full season. Despite terrific results, he moved back to the ‘pen full-time for 2025 (his age-25 season), reached the Majors in late July and was traded to the D-backs shortly after in the Josh Naylor deal ahead of the Deadline.

The 6-foot-4 left-hander is about as east-west of a reliever as you’ll find in today’s game. He has a 96-98 mph sinker with massive armside movement out of a low three-quarters delivery. He touched 100 mph twice in Triple-A and has been on that doorstep in the Majors, topping out at 99.8 in the bigs in September. With minimal extension, batters still see the heater well but often pound it into the ground. Garcia’s most deadly pitch is a mid-80s sweeper with 14-17 inches of sweep, a nice fit for his arm angle. It’s a lefty crusher with that much break, and it proved effective against righties too, who missed on 40.9 percent of their swings against it in the bigs. 

Garcia also has a shorter 88-91 mph cutter for opposite-side bats and rarely uses a changeup that’s essentially a slower sinker. With all that movement, he needs batters chasing him outside of the zone to be effective, but walks are still going to be part of his story in relief. Garcia turns 26 in May and has a good shot at being Arizona’s primary lefty out of the bullpen.

After three uneven seasons at Quinnipiac University, Garcia got the chance to transfer to Texas A&M to serve as a reliever in 2023. Much like in his time with the Bobcats, Garcia showed he could miss bats with his stuff, even if he didn’t always know where it was going. Taking a flyer on a lefty like this on Day 3 of the Draft is not uncommon, but what has been surprising is that not only did the Mariners take Garcia in the 11th round of the ‘23 Draft, they let him start throughout his first full season. Garcia ran with the opportunity, pitching his way to Double-A and leading the organization in ERA (2.25) and K/9 (10.4) in 2024. He moved to the bullpen for good in his age-25 season in ’25 and rose to the Majors just before he was traded to the D-backs in the Josh Naylor deal.

A terrific late bloomer story, the 6-foot-4 Garcia seems to be getting better the more mound time he gets, and his stuff was ticking up in the shorter role. His heavy two-seam fastball sits 96-98 mph and touches 100 with a ton of sink. From a low three-quarter slot, he works east-west off that with a mid-80s sweeper that averaged 15.4 inches of glove side movement at Triple-A -- equal to the arm side run of the sinker -- and generated a ton of swing-and-miss. He also has a sharper upper-80s hard slider/cutter that serves as his option for righties. That’s much needed since his changeup stays in the back pocket.

Garcia’s lack of a changeup and his overall command, along with his advanced age, led to the move to the bullpen as he entered his mid-20s. That sinker-sweeper combo, however, should be enough to keep him in the bigs, especially if he can be limited to lefty-heavy appearances in the desert.

Garcia spent three years pitching at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, missing bats as a starter in 2022, then transferring to Texas A&M to pitch out of the Aggies bullpen in 2023. He again registered high strikeout rates, along with a lot of walks, but showed enough promise for the Mariners to take him in Round 11 of the 2023 Draft and sign him for the Day 3 slot value of $150,000. He pitched well in his brief pro debut that summer, and that's carried over to his first full season, throwing more strikes and earning a promotion from High-A to Double-A in the process.

After seeming like a surefire bullpen piece, Garcia might now have a chance to start. The 6-foot-4 lefty has three pitches that all at least flash above-average. He throws a heavy two-seam fastball, one that sits around 94 mph and touches as high as 97 mph and gets a ton of groundball outs. He complements his sinking heater with an above-average cutter and a sweeping slider, both of which can miss a lot of bats, though he doesn't command them consistently.

Garcia's overall command and control are what might keep him from starting long-term. He delivers all of his offerings from a slot that's lower three-quarters, bordering on sidearm, and while that certainly adds deception, he doesn't always repeat it enough to find the zone. He's taken strides in that direction, cutting his walk rate considerably as a pro, so the Mariners don't want to give up on the starting experiment yet, but his stuff could tick up even more if he has to return to a bullpen.
