The Mets selected Sproat twice out of the University of Florida, first as a third-rounder in 2022 and then (with his permission) as a second-rounder in 2023. He signed for slot at $1,474,500 the second time around. He enjoyed a breakout first full season in which he posted a 3.40 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 116 1/3 innings across High-A, Double-A and Triple-A but was slow out of the gate in Syracuse in ’25. A second-half turnaround pushed him to a Major League debut in September, and he made four total starts for the Mets. Sproat was traded to the Brewers in January as part of the return for Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander works with a powerful and diverse pitch mix. His four-seamer sits 95-98 mph (touching triple-digits on occasion) but has just standard movement at best, and Sproat was more effective with a 94-97 mph sinker, a pitch he leaned hard on against righties in the bigs. His 83-86 mph sweeper was his best whiff generator in the Majors -- a pitch that almost mirrored the horizontal break of the sinker without the expected dip of other breaking balls. His 89-91 mph changeup also looked much like the sinker with a bit of velo separation and a little more drop, making it effective, and he increased the usage on a sweeping 79-81 mph curveball against lefties when he made The Show. There’s also a harder 88-91 mph slider.

Sproat utilized a “let it eat” mentality to throw with more intent in the latter months of 2025, but he didn’t get out of control by doing so with an 8.5 percent walk rate at Triple-A after July (compared to a 30.0 percent K rate). He has a deep enough arsenal to keep hitters guessing and should be a No. 4/5 starter candidate for Milwaukee straight away.

A rare two-time pick by the same organization, Sproat chose not to sign with the Mets as a third-round pick in 2022 but granted the organization permission to take him again a year later. New York did -- this time in the second round -- and signed him for slot at $1,474,500 after striking out 134 in 106 1/3 innings at Florida in 2023. Sproat flew through the Mets system in his first season, climbing from High-A Brooklyn to Triple-A Syracuse while posting a 3.40 ERA and fanning 131 in 116 1/3 innings. He was back in Syracuse for ’25, made four MLB starts in September and then was traded to the Brewers in January as part of the Freddy Peralta/Tobias Myers return.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander’s fastball stands out more for its velocity than its shape. Sproat will run the four-seamer up to triple-digits on occasion and continued to sit in the 95-98 mph range even late in the season at Triple-A. But there isn’t great ride on the pitch, and batters at the Minors’ top level took advantage, hitting .380 off the fastball alone. Sproat can also work in a sinker around the same velo band, and the extra look helps generate a lot of groundball contact. His upper-80s changeup gets the right amount of separation and fade to give the former Gator a weapon against lefties, and after early struggles in 2025, he's leaned on the pitch more to right himself. Sproat works with both an 84-86 mph sweeper and harder 88-90 mph slider. The former is better at generating whiffs. A 79-81 mph curveball offers another occasional breaker.

Sproat was control over command in his first taste of the Minors. He kept walk rates generally in check, but Triple-A batters proved they could bang pitches he leaves too much over the plate. That said, Sproat has the velocity and pitch mix to feature as a starter, and his ground-ball tendencies should be a good fit as a potential No. 3/4 starter for a Milwaukee club that prioritizes infield defense.

Sproat’s amateur career was always highlighted by tremendous raw stuff, but inconsistency caused him to fall to the seventh round (Rangers) as a prep arm in 2019 and then the third round (Mets) out of Florida in 2022. He chose not to sign with New York in hopes of increasing his stock as a Gator, and after setting a personal high with 134 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings in 2023, he was selected again by the Mets (with his permission) in the second round last July and signed for slot at $1,474,500.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander can touch triple-digits, as he's done a few times on the pro side, and he'll typically sit in the 95-97 mph range. He'll get some armside run on the heater too, so batters have to worry about more than just the velocity. His upper-80s changeup shows decent enough separation and good fade to give him another weapon that's worked in both college and the pros. He'll show a mid-80s slider and an upper-80s cutter -- two different pitches with varying amounts of horizontal break that have given upper-level hitters fits. There is also a 78-81 mph curveball that ranks behind the rest of the group in usage.

While his K rate jumped in 2023, Sproat still walked 10.3 percent of the batters he faced for the Division I runners-up. His control has been more reined in during his quick ascent through the New York system as he reached Triple-A by August. He's become the Mets' best pitching prospect and has the arsenal depth and electricity to be a potential No. 2 starter in the Majors.

Often, college pitchers at programs like the University of Florida are known quantities, and it’s that track record that teams bank on when drafting them, with someone like Brady Singer fitting in that category. Then there are complete wild cards, pitchers with huge stuff, but without a resume of success or consistency. That’s where Sproat lives, with a strong turn with Team USA over the summer having had some evaluators hoping he might turn a corner in 2022, but it’s been mostly inconsistent performances with flashes of that stuff.

Sproat has four pitches all coming from a prototypical 6-foot-3 frame. He showed flashes of all of it in the small sample with USA Baseball. His fastball averaged over 97 mph with Team USA and touched 99-100, he was still averaging over 95 mph this past fall and has been just over that this spring while touching triple-digits, though it gets hit harder than it should. His slider and curve are distinct pitches, with the former the better offering, a hard, 85-88 mph wipeout power breaking ball that misses bats, while the curve is a softer get-me-over option. He has solid feel for a changeup as well.

One of the biggest things that has held Sproat back has been his command. He’s been a bit better this spring, but still walking too many tHe’s walked 5.9 per nine in his limited innings, nearly entirely out of the bullpen, with the Gators, though he was more consistently in and around the zone over the summer. He needs more mound time and if he can throw enough strikes to get it this spring, he could soar up Draft boards.
