Scouting Report

2024

The Red Sox got Blalock away from a Kennesaw State commitment with a $250,000 bonus as a 32nd-rounder in 2019. He missed out on 2020 like every other Minor Leaguer, made 23 starts at Single-A Salem the following season and then was sidelined for all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery. He impressed in his return last summer with a 2.19 ERA, 58 strikeouts and 13 walks in 51 1/3 innings between Single-A and High-A, only to be moved to the Brewers for Luis Urías at the Trade Deadline. Blalock made only four starts for High-A Wisconsin after the trade, but Milwaukee liked him enough to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft with a 40-man addition in November. He’s spent the bulk of the year with Double-A Biloxi, making a one-inning big league debut in June, but was on the move again as the Trade Deadline approached in July in a deal that brought Nick Mears to the Brewers.

Blalock flashed a 92-96 mph fastball in his return from surgery, and the pitch featured enough ride up in the zone to play above average velo at times. His 78-82 mph power curveball drew immediate praise from Brewers higher-ups following the trade as another potential above-average offering, though it hasn’t been as sharp in 2024, while his mid-80s slider gives batters another breaking ball to ponder. He added an upper-80s splitter and that was showing solid development in 2023, though lefties still enjoyed much better success against him than righties.

The fact that Blalock’s control returned so quickly post-TJ was a promising sign, and that was one of the reasons why the Crew didn’t want to risk losing him via the Rule 5 Draft, though that’s another area of his game that regressed a bit this season. Still just 23, time is on his side, with hope that Blalock can continue to trend up the farther he gets from surgery.

2023

Blalock looked to be headed to Kennesaw State in 2019 until the Red Sox swooped in to take him in the 32nd round and signed him for $250,000 just before the signing deadline. Following the missed 2020 season, he made 23 starts at Single-A Salem, posting a 4.27 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings, but he eventually needed Tommy John surgery that knocked him out for the entire 2022 season. The right-hander returned to the mound this year and looked stellar coming off the surgery, striking out 58 batters in 53 1/3 innings between Single-A and High-A before the Sox traded him to the Brewers at the Trade Deadline for Luis Urías.

Blalock has looked no worse for the lost time in terms of his stuff. His fastball is around 93-96 mph, and he controls it well for someone who missed a ton of recent time. On top of that, he throws his secondaries for strikes as well. Some evaluators, including Milwaukee officials upon acquiring Blalock, prefer his power curveball around 78-82 mph that can mess with hitters' eye levels. Others prefer his mid-80s slider with its more horizontal look. He also uses an upper-80s splitter as his changeup, but it’s only somewhat effective at holding off splits issues against lefties.

The 6-foot-2 hurler hasn’t needed much time finding his control post-TJ, and he continues to have the look of a potential No. 4 starter. He’ll turn 23 in December and may factor into Milwaukee’s 40-man plans as he becomes Rule 5-eligible in the offseason.

2021

Blalock didn't draw a lot of scouting attention as a Georgia high school senior in 2019 and appeared headed to Kennesaw State until the Red Sox selected him in the 32nd round and gave him an above-slot $250,000 bonus on the day of the signing deadline. After a brief pro debut, he was limited to at-home development for most of 2020 before becoming the surprise standout of Boston's instructional league program. He has made a successful transition to full-season ball this year.

Blalock mostly worked with an upper-80s fastball as a senior, but the Red Sox thought he had a good deal of projection remaining in his 6-foot-2 frame and have been proven correct. He pushed his heater to 95 during instructs last fall and has worked at 92-94 mph and touched 97 with good carry up in the strike zone this season. He has three secondary pitches that all could become at least solid: a pair of power breaking balls (low-80s curveball, mid-80s slider) and a changeup that has made strides as he has used it more often in 2021.

In addition to his stuff, Blalock's control also has steadily improved since he turned pro. He's strong and repeats his delivery well. He has the makings of a No. 4 starter but will need some time to develop.

Pitch Movement

How this works: This section shows two different ways to evaluate pitch movement. On the left, “Total Movement” shows the real-world movement of a pitch, including the forces of gravity, which affects every pitch thrown. Since gravity requires time, and slower pitches aren't 'better' just because they have more time to move, a pitch's movement is compared to other pitches of the same pitch type, within +/- 2 MPH and +/- 0.5 feet of extension/release. On the right, Induced Movement (or IVB) is reported without gravity, and attempts to isolate movement created by the pitcher's ability to spin and manipulate the ball.
