It has been a steady progression for Avila, who first signed with the Royals in 2018 out of Venezuela and has now worked his way up to the big leagues. The sturdy right-hander made his Major League debut on Aug. 13 last year and impressed in his short sample size in the Royals’ bullpen, posting a 1.29 ERA across 14 innings with 16 strikeouts and six walks. He missed about two months earlier in the season with a right shoulder impingement, which actually delayed his debut, but Avila spent the rest of the year bouncing between Kansas City and Triple-A. In Omaha, he posted a 5.23 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) and 53 1/3 innings.

Avila is a fierce competitor and has a cool demeanor on the mound, which helped him in ‘25 during his first MLB stint. He works with two fastballs; both sit around 94-95 mph but flashed upper 90s in shorter stints, with the four-seamer showing natural cut and ride. When Avila found that two-seamer a few years ago, it really opened up his arsenal. His low-80s curveball is a high-spin pitch that gets swing-and-miss, and it was a pitch he used 44.2 percent of the time in the bigs. He also has a fringe-average changeup, but he didn’t throw it much in the big leagues and will need it as a starter. He is also working on a slider heading into 2026. With near-average command, Avila throws from a high three-quarters slot, hides the ball well and is efficient down the mound.

Avila will likely serve as rotation depth to begin 2026, but the Royals now know what he could do in the bullpen. That’s where he profiles best, either as a middle reliever or potentially more if he can harness his control.

The Royals signed a 16-year-old Avila out of Venezuela during the 2018 international signing period. Ever since, it’s been steady progress for the now-23-year-old who spent most of the 2024 season at Double-A before making one Triple-A start. Avila posted a 1.37 WHIP over 19 starts for Northwest Arkansas. It was the first time since 2022 that he didn’t throw over 100 innings, as he missed about six weeks with a minor oblique injury. In five games (three starts) in the Arizona Fall League, Avila posted a 3.07 ERA with 17 strikeouts and eight walks in 14 2/3 innings. The Royals added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft in November.

Last year marked the first time Avila missed significant time; he’s been a durable young pitcher for the Royals, and those innings don’t go unnoticed. Avila's comfort zone with his fastball is 94-95 mph with flashes of the upper 90s, and the pitch has natural cut and ride. To help him command the armside of the plate, Avila introduced a two-seamer that is about the same velo as his four-seamer. His 80-82 mph curveball has become a true weapon with high spin and impressive depth; he's gone to it more in 2025 than his four-seamer. A fringe-average changeup rounds out Avila’s arsenal, a pitch he’s still developing with a focus on backing off the 89-91 mph velocity. Avila has near-average command but hides the ball well in his delivery, and as he’s grown, his presence on the mound has gotten stronger.

Now that he’s on the 40-man, Avila could make his big league debut at some point in 2025. He needs more development time in Omaha, particularly with his changeup and command, but will be part of the Triple-A depth after dealing with a right shoulder impingement earlier in the summer. Avila will continue to start but might be someone whom the Royals can rely on in different roles depending on need for a long reliever or a swingman.

He’s flown under the radar since then, throwing at the Royals’ Dominican Academy in ‘18 and ‘19 before making his stateside debut in ‘21, pitching in Rookie ball for most of the year. Avila has pitched 223 2/3 innings in the last two seasons -- third-most in the Royals' system -- and had similar years stats-wise. In 2023, he had a 4.39 ERA in High-A Quad Cities with a 21.6% strikeout rate and 9.3% walk rate.

At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Avila attacks hitters with a 92-95 mph fastball that cuts and has some ride to it. When the Royals signed Avila, he was around 87-89 mph with that pitch, and they think he’ll continue to add velocity, though command remains a work in progress. Avila’s slider is average and has the potential to be an out pitch for him, sometimes looping but with good spin. He throws a tumbling changeup that is near average now but shows signs of being plus with more development. 

Innings are valuable, and evaluators have taken notice of Avila’s durability and growth. Officials rave about his competitiveness, work ethic and knowledge on the mound. Avila has a repeatable delivery, and his ceiling is likely a back-end starter type who could fill different roles later in his career. He spent this past offseason working out in Arizona and seems primed for the Double-A rotation in ‘24.

His results were varied with a 4.54 ERA, 97 strikeouts and 49 walks, but he’s no longer under the radar because of the stuff he showed.

At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Avila showed up last year having physically matured with a good presence on the mound. He attacks hitters with a 92-95 mph fastball that cuts and has some ride to it. When the Royals signed him, he was around 87-89 mph with that pitch, and they think he’ll continue to add velocity. Avila’s mid-80s slider is average and has the potential to be an out pitch for him, sometimes looping but with good spin, and he also showcases a more traditional 12-to-6 curveball in the upper-70s that flashes above-average. He throws a tumbling changeup that is near-average now but shows signs of being plus with more development. His fastball command is still a work in progress and has been an emphasis since the start of 2022.

Innings are valuable, and evaluators took notice of Avila’s durability and growth last season. Officials rave about his knowledge on the mound, competitiveness and work ethic, noting he has improved every year since they signed him as a teen. Avila has a higher floor because of his repeatable delivery and ability to pitch innings, and his ceiling is likely as a back-end-starter type who could fill different roles later in his career. In 2023, he’s remained a groundball-heavy starter at High-A Quad Cities, building on last year’s gains.
