High school pitchers from the Northeast can often take longer to develop than peers from warm-weather states, so the Royals knew they might have to be a bit patient when they took Blewett in the second round out of upstate New York and gave him $1.8 million to sign. He's proven to be durable, yet inconsistent, though there's hope the big right-hander has turned a corner with a strong finish to his Double-A season and an outstanding showing in the Arizona Fall League, which helped him earn a spot on the 40-man roster.
With a solid three-pitch mix and excellent Trackman data, Blewett should have more success on his resume than he does. Some of that has to do with his pitch selection, as he relies too heavily on his fastball. The Royals think there might still be a tick more to come velocity-wise as he's shown the ability. He'll show 94- to 95-mph and maintains his velocity deeper into starts than he used to, but he doesn't sit there. His curve has improved, though he can get a little high with his release point when he throws it. He's among the best in the system in landing his breaking ball and changeup for strikes, a sign he should mix them in more which, in turn, would allow his fastball to play up.
Between his Double-A season and the AFL, Blewett topped 170 innings in 2018 and he did his best pitching at the end of the year. If he continues to refine his command and his gameplan on the mound, he has every chance to still be the mid-rotation workhorse the Royals envisioned.
