One of college baseball's best two-way players during two seasons at Wichita State, Tolle struggled at the plate but won Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year honors in 2024 after transferring to Texas Christian in 2024. His elite extension overshadowed his stuff, but that was enough for the Red Sox to give him an over-slot $2 million bonus in the second round. He raced from High-A to Boston in his pro debut last year. Among Minor Leaguers with at least 90 innings, he ranked second in strikeout-minus-walk rate (30 percent), third in strikeout rate (37 percent) and fourth in K/BB ratio (5.8).

The Red Sox had Tolle concentrate on adding strength and athleticism after turning pro, which helped his fastball go from sitting at 91 mph and peaking at 96 with the Horned Frogs to averaging 96 and touching 101 in his first taste of pro ball. He averaged 7 1/2 feet of extension with Boston, an inch behind big league leader Alexis Diaz, and posted a 39 percent whiff rate with his heater between the Majors and Minors. He dialed back his fastball usage from 75 percent at TCU to 57 percent in his first pro season, in part because his secondary pitches improved as well.

While Tolle doesn't get much horizontal action on his offerings, he added power and consistency to his mid-80s slider and upper-80s changeup and developed an upper-80s cutter as well. They all grade as average but are enough to keep hitters from focusing exclusively on his fastball. He attacks hitters and pounds the strike zone, adding to a package that some evaluators believe makes him the best lefty pitching prospect in baseball.

After signing for an over-slot $2 million in the second round, he has ranked among the Minor League leaders in strikeout percentage and quickly earned a promotion to Triple-A in his 2025 pro debut.

The 6-foot-6 Tolle gets down the mound very well, creating elite extension (an average of 7-foot-4 with the Horned Frogs) and a low release height that helps his fastball play well above its velocity. The Red Sox had him focus on improving his strength and athleticism after he signed, and the result is that his heater has gone from sitting at 91 mph and topping out at 96 at TCU to averaging 95 and peaking at 99 this year. His combination of velo and shape has proven unhittable so far, as his fastball generated an unfathomable 46 percent swing-and-miss rate in the first half of the season.

Tolle was a polarizing prospect in the Draft, with some scouts wowed by his fastball metrics and others seeing him as more of multi-inning reliever with just one weapon. To enhance his chances of making it as a starter, Boston has had him dial back his fastball usage (75 percent last spring) and work on improving his average mid-80s sweeping slider and fringy upper-80s changeup, both of which have added power as well. He's pounding the strike zone and has a bulldog mentality, two more reasons the Red Sox think he can become a frontline starter.
