Scouting Report

2026

A teammate of Paul Skenes at El Toro HS in Lake Forest, Calif., Church went to UC Irvine and was drafted in the 11th round of the 2022 Draft, one year after he set the Anteaters’ single-season record with 100 hits. Church moved up one level per year in his first three seasons (with some Arizona Fall League action mixed in) before repeating Double-A Springfield in 2025 and taking off from there. Church reached Triple-A Memphis by June, hit .335/.400/.521 with seven homers in 53 games for the Redbirds and was in the Majors from Aug. 17 onward. He batted .179 with a .504 OPS in 27 games in his first MLB taste.

In pushing for The Show, Church showed a practically elite in-zone contact rate at Triple-A, allowing him to strike out in only 10.3 percent of his plate appearances. He made contact on virtually every pitch type too, often prioritizing just getting the ball in play knowing he could beat out basic dribblers on the infield. (In fact, he laid down a few bunts to push the envelope too.) That approach also allowed him to expand the zone, and that chase rate jumped more than a few ticks in The Show, causing his whiffs to also increase sharply. Church has some pop -- his 13 homers in 2025 were a new career high -- but by hunting contact, he might struggle to chase double-digit dingers moving forward.

The good thing is Church is an excellent defender at all three outfield spots with efficient routes and incredible closing speed that helps him fill highlight reels. He was worth 4 Outs Above Average in his short MLB sample, and the glove, along with his plus arm strength, will carry enough weight to earn him continued fourth outfielder opportunities.

2025

Church was Paul Skenes’ high-school teammate at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California, and headed to UC Irvine from there. He set the Anteaters’ single-season record with 100 hits in 2021, returned for a solid season in 2022 and went in the 11th round to the Cardinals that summer, signing for $125,000. He was an average performer for High-A Peoria in 2023 and climbed to Double-A with solid results (.263/.331/.373, nine homers, 24 steals) last season. Church rounded out his second full season in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .364/.397/.418 in 15 games.

What immediately catches scouts’ attention with Church is his plus-plus speed. He can burst out of the box as a left-handed hitter and press infielders on any ground ball, and he’s a consistent and efficient threat to steal bags. With that speed, he can track down balls all over the grass and continually popped up in highlight reels for his ability to close down on balls. His arm strength works anywhere, and he’s rotated between all three spots in his career.

Without a noisy operation in the box, Church shows promising contact rates against all types of pitches, and his in-zone contact rate has been phenomenal with Triple-A Memphis in 2025. He isn’t a huge power threat, however, with a high ground rate and average-ish exit velocities. Still, there's no doubt he's in the midst of his best offensive season in the pros and looks closer to becoming a fun throwback fourth outfielder who helps with his high contact rate, fast wheels and great glove.
