Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 65 | Overall: 40

The final position player signed by the Mets in their 2018-19 international class, Corona turned pro for $10,000 out of Venezuela at the relatively advanced age of 19 in April 2019. Eight months later, the Astros acquired him and Blake Taylor in exchange for Jake Marisnick. After totaling 41 homers and 60 steals the past two seasons and winning a Minor League Gold Glove in 2023, he secured a spot on Houston's 40-man roster in November.

A right-handed hitter, Corona started doing more damage at the plate since focusing on adding strength two offseasons ago, when he gained 15 pounds without losing any of his quickness. He began hitting the ball harder, launching balls to his pull side more easily and showing a little more patience. But those gains have evaporated during a disastrous 2024 season at the plate, as he has struggled to handle quality velocity and lay off non-fastballs outside the strike zone while repeating Double-A.

Corona has plus speed and uses it aggressively on the bases and in the outfield. He chases balls down from gap to gap in center field and makes accurate throws with an average arm. He's an asset at all three outfield spots and would make a useful reserve if he doesn't hit enough to be a regular.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The last position player signed in the Mets' 2018-19 international class, Corona turned pro for $10,000 out of Venezuela at the relatively advanced age of 19. After his strong debut in Rookie ball, New York traded him and Blake Taylor to the Astros for Jake Marisnick in December 2019. He was the most improved Astros farmhand from 2021 to 2022, hitting .278/.362/.495 with 19 homers and 28 steals between two Class A stops last year.

Corona got better after committing to getting stronger, adding 15 pounds without losing any of his plus speed. A right-handed hitter, he also showed a more disciplined approach, hit the ball harder and did a better job of launching balls in the air to his pull side when given the opportunity. If he continues to improve, he could become an average hitter who produces 15-20 homers per year.

Corona is aggressive on the bases and also uses his quickness well on defense. He's one of the better center-field defenders in the system and keeps runners honest with his average arm. He also has seen action on both corners and profiles as a versatile fourth outfielder.
