The Nationals believed they were making a high-upside pick when they selected the 6-foot-8 San Jacinto (Texas) JC product 17th overall in 2019, and four years later, he made his Major League debut, though it was a bumpy ride in between those two points. That path was marked by a lost 2020 season, a shortened 2021 due to shoulder and blister issues, a 2022 spent entirely at Single-A and a 2023 climb through three levels. Rutledge posted a 3.71 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 119 innings at Double-A and Triple-A before his September arrival in the bigs, where he was much more roughed up (6.75 ERA, .304 average-against in four starts).

The towering righty throws both a four-seamer and a sinker in the mid-90s and can touch 98-99 mph with both. However, he doesn’t get great extension out of his large frame, giving batters just a little longer to react to the heaters. His 82-86 mph slider posted his best whiff rate across all three levels, and even Major Leaguers couldn’t manage much off it because of its two-plane break. He left his upper-80s changeup up too much in The Show, and it got subsequently pounded, while his 79-81 mph curveball only got five percent usage.

Although his walks ticked up under the ABS system in Triple-A, Rutledge was a control-over-command type in 2023 as he continued to adjust away from the short arm action of earlier in his career. Major League hitters were happy to take advantage of pitches in the zone, and after taking his MLB lumps, Rutledge has to either work more at the edges or sharpen his pitches if he’s going to stick in future Washington rotations.

Rutledge moved from Arkansas to San Jacinto JC (Texas) for the 2019 collegiate season after tearing a hip labrum as a freshman, and he showed enough stuff to become the 17th overall pick. His pro career has featured a similar mix of injuries and promise. The 6-foot-8 right-hander missed the 2020 season like everyone else in the Minors, then was limited to 36 1/3 innings by shoulder and blister concerns. The Nats kept him at Single-A Fredericksburg for all of 2022, hoping to establish a base layer of success, and Rutledge finished with a 4.90 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 99 strikeouts in 97 1/3 frames.

A large presence on the bump, Rutledge regularly sits 94-96 mph with both his four-seam and two-seam fastball and can touch the upper-90s in starts. The development of the two-seamer, in particular, has given his heater some needed movement and helped drive up his ground-ball rate to a career-best 50.7 percent. His mid-80s slider can be his swing-and-miss pitch with its promising hard break, while his upper-80s changeup and vertical curveball are average, though he's been throwing the changeup more and more as 2023 has rolled along.

While there were previous concerns about short arm action in his delivery, Rutledge has added a little more length and that hasn’t come at the cost of throwing strikes. His control (6.9 percent BB rate) was at its best in the Minors so far last year, giving the Nats further belief he could be a starter. He’s on the 40-man roster, having been added in November, and is in his age-24 season, but he's been able to hold off a potential move to the bullpen to this point.

Rutledge began his collegiate career at Arkansas but moved to San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College after suffering a torn hip labrum as a freshman. He was lights-out following the transfer (0.87 ERA, 134 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings), prompting the Nationals to grab him 17th overall in the 2019 Draft. Like so many picks that year, Rutledge was forced into alternate-site action in 2020. Shoulder and blister issues limited him to 36 1/3 innings across three levels last summer, and he struggled with results, finishing with a 7.68 ERA and 20 walks. He made up for the lost time in the Arizona Fall League, where he was again inconsistent but finished on a high with seven strikeouts and 13 swings-and-misses over 3 1/3 relief innings in the championship game.

Standing at 6-foot-8, Rutledge can be an imposing figure on the mound. He uses that frame to sit comfortably in the mid-90s with his fastball, and he can reach triple-digits when he rears back. He showed in the Fall League why his 82-85 mph slider is his best secondary; the breaker, which he can manipulate to add more or less break as he desires, led to nine of the 13 whiffs in the AFL championship. He’ll also mix in an upper-80s changeup and low-70s curveball, both of which could be average Major League pitches. The former shows a little more promise with the way it plays lower in the zone.

Look at Rutledge’s stuff, and you could see a Major League starter. A short-arm-action in his delivery puts that projection into question, and inconsistencies with his location don’t help either. Few Nationals pitchers need innings more than Rutledge, or else it could be time to start looking at him as a power bullpen arm beyond this season.

Rutledge was a juco success story. Jumping from Arkansas to San Jacinto (Texas) after suffering a torn hip labrum as a freshman, the right-hander showed big-time stuff and results, posting a 0.87 ERA with 134 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings in 2019. The Nationals swooped for him at No. 17 and signed him to a $3.45 million bonus, only a little below slot for the pick. He saw action at three Minor League levels in 2019 and was an alternate-site standout at Fredericksburg during the lost 2020 season. Shoulder and blister problems have limited Rutledge further in what could have been his first full campaign in 2021.

The St. Louis-area native can be a daunting presence on the bump, given his 6-foot-8 frame and power stuff. The fastball typically sits in the mid-90s but can touch higher with a ton of spin, and Rutledge can command it well in the strike zone. The slider is his clear second pitch, and the Nationals have been impressed with the way he can play with the looks of it, coming harder or shorter depending on need. The curve and change were two clear focuses at the alt site and could be solid Major League pitches in time. The changeup might be ahead of the two right now with Rutledge’s ability to throw it low in the zone and induce ground balls, while the curve remains more for show at this stage, though he can occasionally spike it. But both have the chance to develop with more pro experience. 

Improved control was another point of emphasis in Fredericksburg, and it should be an average skill by the time Rutledge reaches the Majors. The pieces are in place for him to fit comfortably in a Major League rotation. He needs just one of the changeup or curveball to click to fully round that future into place, and that could come as he picks up more Minor League innings than the 37 1/3 he possessed entering 2021.

After a torn hip labrum that required surgery wiped out much of Rutledge’s freshman year at Arkansas, he transferred to San Jacinto (Texas) for his sophomore campaign and emerged as the best junior college prospect in the country in 2019, registering a 0.87 ERA with 134 strikeouts and 30 walks over 82 2/3 innings. The Nationals were thrilled to get the big right-hander in the first round and signed him for $3.45 million, slightly below slot value for the No. 17 overall pick. He made an immediate impact in his pro debut, flashing electric stuff while climbing three levels up to Class A Hagerstown. 

At 6-foot-8, Rutledge has a physical presence on the mound that he backs up with a powerful four-pitch mix. His plus-plus fastball reaches 99 mph and averaged 96 mph during his six starts at Hagerstown, and he showed the ability to carry that premium velocity deep into starts as an amateur. His heater has riding life at the top of the strike zone and sink toward the bottom, though its movement isn't as consistent as its velocity. He has a second plus offering in an upper-80s slider that plays nicely off his fastball and nets him whiffs with its depth and late bite. 

Rutledge’s low-80s curveball is behind his slider but has above-average potential, and club officials are optimistic about the right-hander’s capacity for developing a usable changeup.  

Despite his large frame and long levers, Rutledge utilizes a short stride in his delivery and doesn’t get a ton of extension over his front side. However, it doesn’t detract from the quality of his pure stuff, and he still manages to create a difficult angle on his pitches that make them even harder to hit. The Nationals would like for Rutledge to become more consistent in repeating his delivery and believe doing so will lead to gains in both his control and command. There’s front-of-rotation potential in Rutledge’s profile if it all clicks, and he has the requisite two plus pitches to dominate as a reliever should starting not work out.

Rutledge has emerged as the best junior college prospect since Bryce Harper went No. 1 overall out of Southern Nevada in 2010 and the best in Texas since Clay Buchholz was a supplemental first-rounder from Angelina in 2005. He intrigued scouts enough to go in the first five rounds as a Missouri high schooler in 2017, but his strong commitment to Arkansas left him undrafted. He pitched just 15 2/3 innings as a freshman for the Razorbacks and was left off their postseason roster, prompting his decision to transfer to San Jacinto.

Rutledge pitches at 94-97 mph and reaches 99 with his fastball, showing the ability to carry premium velocity into the late innings. While his heater has riding life at the top of the strike zone and sink toward the bottom, its movement isn't as consistent as its velocity. His upper-80s slider can be a wipeout pitch with depth and his low-80s curveball can be a plus offering with 12-6 break when at their best, though they aren't always reliable weapons and can play closer to average.

With his huge 6-foot-8 frame, Rutledge creates difficult angle on his pitches that make them even harder to hit. His biggest needs are to improve a changeup that can get too firm and flat, and to refine his control and command. He has an unusually short arm action for such a big pitcher, though it doesn't compromise what could be the best all-around stuff in the 2019 Draft.
