Rodríguez was the lightest player (160 pounds) and third-youngest pitcher (17 years, 11 months) selected in the 2021 Draft, where the Red Sox popped him in the fourth round. Boston swapped him along with international bonus pool money to acquire Carlos Narváez from the Yankees at the 2024 Winter Meetings in a deal that looks like it will benefit both clubs. In his first season with his new organization, he rose from High-A to Triple-A while ranking second in the Minors in strikeouts (176), fifth in innings (150) and eighth in ERA (2.58) and opponent average (.192).

Rodríguez's stuff made a jump in 2024 and improved across the board last year, giving him four solid or better pitches. His best offering is a four-seam fastball that now sits at 96 mph and reaches 99 with bat-missing carry and some armside run. His top secondary weapon is an 82-85 mph slider with sweep and depth, while his upper-70s curveball and upper-80s splitter/changeup elicit more chases.

As Rodríguez has gained strength -- he's at least 20 pounds heavier than his listed 160 -- he has found it easier to keep his long limbs in sync, repeat his delivery and throw strikes. He uses his athleticism to get down the mound well and create quality extension that allows his pitches to get on hitters quicker than expected. He's looking more and more like a mid-rotation starter, and there still may be more projection in his frame.

2025

The lightest player (160 pounds) and third-youngest pitcher (17 years, 11 months) selected in the 2021 Draft, Rodríguez went to the Red Sox in the fourth round. They had him concentrate on gaining strength while handling him with care, pushing his pro debut to June 2022 and holding him to 183 1/3 innings across his first three seasons. His stuff began to pop in 2024, when he posted a 2.91 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 89 2/3 frames at two Class A stops, and Boston dealt him and some international bonus pool money to acquire catcher Carlos Narváez from the Yankees at the Winter Meetings in December.

Rodríguez's fastball sat at 91-95 mph in 2023 before jumping to 93-96 and topping out at 98 last season, featuring some armside run and carry. His slider got stronger as well, parking in the mid-80s with improved depth and becoming his best secondary offering. His upper-70s curveball with similar shape and upper-80s splitter/changeup give him a pair of average pitches to round out his repertoire.

Rodríguez uses his 6-foot-3 frame and athleticism to get down the mound well and create quality extension that throws off hitters' timing. He uses a simple side-step delivery with a high leg kick, and he's still learning to keep his long limbs in sync and repeat his mechanics. That should become easier as he continues to get stronger, and he'll reach his mid-rotation starter ceiling if he develops average control.

2024

Rodriguez-Cruz was the lightest player (160 pounds) and third-youngest pitcher (17 years, 11 months) selected in the 2021 Draft, when the Red Sox took the Puerto Rican high schooler in the fourth round. They had him focus on adding strength early in his career, delaying his pro debut until June 2022 and monitoring his workload carefully afterward. His stuff made a jump during the 2024 season, after which Boston traded him along with international bonus pool money to the Yankees for Carlos Narvaez in December.

After working at 91-95 mph with his fastball a year ago, Rodriguez-Cruz operated at 94-96 mph and topped out at 98 this April while featuring some armside run and carry on his heater. His slider has gained some velocity as well, sitting in the upper 80s with good depth and becoming his best secondary pitch. He also employs an upper-70s curveball that he locates well and has developed an upper-80s splitter that he uses as a change of pace.

Rodriguez-Cruz uses his 6-foot-3 frame to create plenty of extension in his delivery, which helps his pitches play up because they get on hitters quickly. He has a high leg kick and still is learning to keep his long limbs in sync, which should become easier as he continues to get stronger. If he can develop average control, he could be a mid-rotation starter.

2023

The third-youngest pitcher to sign out of the 2021 Draft, Rodriguez-Cruz didn't turn 18 until a month after the Red Sox selected him in the fourth round. He was also the lightest player picked, carrying just 160 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame, so Boston has had him focus on adding strength early in his career. He didn't make his pro debut until June 2022 and didn't work more than four innings in 13 outings while compiling a 1.88 ERA between Rookie ball and Single-A.

Rodriguez-Cruz works at 92-94 mph and can touch 96 with his fastball, which should gain more velocity as he matures physically and features some armside run and carry. His upper-70s curveball shows good depth and is more effective than his fringy mid-80s slider/cutter. His low-80s changeup has some sink and could become an average offering as he uses it more often.

Despite his lack of present physicality, Rodriguez-Cruz keeps his long limbs in sync and repeats his mechanics well enough to provide consistent strikes. He gets good extension in his delivery, allowing his pitches to get on hitters quicker than expected. He made good progress in his first full year as a pro and could develop into a No. 4 starter if his stuff ticks up once he gains needed strength.

2022

One of the younger and more projectable pitchers in the 2021 Draft, Rodriguez-Cruz didn't turn 18 until a month after the Red Sox made him a fourth-round pick out of a Puerto Rican academy. Because of his youth and the need to add strength to his frame, Boston waited until this summer to have him make his pro debut in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Rodriguez-Cruz has a four-pitch mix highlighted by a 92- to 94-mph fastball that peaks at 96 with some armside run and carry. His best secondary offering is an upper-70s curveball with good depth. He also has a mid-80s slider/cutter and a changeup with similar velocity, both of which have the potential to become average pitches.

Rodriguez-Cruz has a loose arm and does a nice job of keeping his long limbs in sync and throwing strikes. Adding strength to his skinny 6-foot-3 frame is a priority and he's still in the early stages of his career, but he has mid-rotation starter upside.

Pitch Movement

How this works: This section shows two different ways to evaluate pitch movement. On the left, “Total Movement” shows the real-world movement of a pitch, including the forces of gravity, which affects every pitch thrown. Since gravity requires time, and slower pitches aren't 'better' just because they have more time to move, a pitch's movement is compared to other pitches of the same pitch type, within +/- 2 MPH and +/- 0.5 feet of extension/release. On the right, Induced Movement (or IVB) is reported without gravity, and attempts to isolate movement created by the pitcher's ability to spin and manipulate the ball.
