Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 60 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

A two-way performer as an amateur, Morgan played two seasons (2019 and 2021) under John Altobelli, who died in the same helicopter accident that took the life of Kobe Bryant, at Orange Coast (Calif.) Junior College before transferring to NAIA program Hope International for 2022. He also got a stint in the West Coast League with the Portland Pickles that summer before signing with the Padres as a nondrafted free agent to be a full-time reliever that August. He’s climbed as high as Double-A San Antonio since then, with peripherals that often look better than his traditional numbers.

The 6-foot right-hander leans heavily on an upper-80s slider, throwing it more than 45 percent of the time at Double-A entering late July. It tunnels well with his 95-97 mph fastball, only to drop down below bats to cause some uneasy flails from batters. It’s his primary pitch against right-handers but takes a backseat to the heater, which doesn’t feature stellar characteristics beyond velo, against lefties. He’ll also work in an 80-82 mph curveball against righties for a change of speeds on the breaking pitches, but he needs to bounce it to make it most effective.

Morgan’s walk rate has steadily climbed as he’s gone higher in the San Diego system. His lack of a changeup brings alone severe splits concerns, as evidenced by a .593 slugging percentage-against entering late July. But the fastball-slider combo provides enough intrigue to make Morgan a fun development story and a potential righty-heavy reliever in future MLB bullpens.
