Scouting Report

Developing high school catchers tends to take time, and that certainly has been true with Jansen, a Wisconsin prep who signed for $100,000 as a 16th-round pick in 2013. A broken bone in Jansen's left hand wiped out much of his first full season, and a broken hamate bone in the same hand cost him a portion of 2016, but he finally rewarded the Blue Jays' patience the following year with a breakout campaign in which he reached Triple-A. He built on that success again in 2018, putting up strong numbers in Triple-A to earn a SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game selection and, roughly a month later, a callup to the Major Leagues, where he posted a .779 OPS with three homers in 31 games.

Jansen's projection as an above-average hitter is fueled by his knack for making line-drive contact, a product of a level swing that stays in the zone for an extended period of time. He also provides value through his on-base skills, having long exhibited a discerning eye and overall feel for controlling the strike zone. He cleared more fences in 2018, totaling a career-high 15 homers between Triple-A and Toronto, although his power plays almost exclusively to his pull side.

An athletic defender with good blocking technique, Jansen also has made significant gains with his receiving and framing in the last two years. And while his catch-and-throw skills remain fringy -- he threw out just five of 33 (15.2 percent) attempted basestealers, with an average pop-time of 2.08 seconds, in his first taste of the Majors -- Jansen's offensive-minded profile has him positioned to compete for an everyday role in 2019.
