Scouting Report

Jorge stands with Leo Balcazar as two of the more successful prospects to date from the 2021 international signing class. Signed for $495,000 that January, Jorge hit the ground running by posting an OPS over 1.000 in his Dominican Summer League debut and backed it up with two solid seasons in the United States. He hit his first stumbling block in 2024, hitting just .220 with a .685 OPS for High-A Dayton before rediscovering some of his approach, albeit without much impact, in his return to the level in 2025.

What kind of player Jorge ultimately becomes is linked to him buying into an approach that works for him. The undersized left-handed hitter is at his best when he focuses on smaller ball: contact, getting on base, bunting, stealing bases. He’s capable of using the middle of the field well with a line-drive approach and got back to some of that in 2025, but as he did the previous season, his ability to get to some power at times can also lead to his downfall in the form of being too aggressive, not taking walks and increasing his swing-and-miss.

Initially signed as a shortstop, Jorge first moved to second base as the Reds hoped to keep him on the dirt. He was introduced to center field in 2023 and has grown there so much that he’s no longer going to play the infield and is considered one of the best defensive outfielders in the system. Jorge wasn’t put on the 40-man last offseason but wasn’t taken in the Rule 5 because he’s still a few years away. He still has the chance to be a table-setting type if he can commit to that profile.

Over the early stages of his pro career since signing in January 2021 for $495,000, Jorge had produced at pretty much every stop, from the Dominican Summer League after signing to the Arizona Complex League in 2022 and then in a strong full-season debut that got him to High-A Dayton in 2023. The progress halted a bit in 2024 as he struggled for the first time back with Dayton. He finished with a .686 OPS, though the Reds think there were some signs of positive development at the end of the season before a sprained left thumb ended his year in August.

When he's swinging the bat well, Jorge uses his left-handed swing to send line drives to all fields. He'd added strength to his 5-foot-10 frame to provide a little more extra-base thump. But he lost his approach for much of the 2024 season, and while he showed he was capable of reaching the seats to his pull side, he got too pull happy, leading to more strikeouts and fewer walks. He was seeing the ball a bit better in the second half and embracing using the middle of the field more prior to his injury.

Jorge has used his plus speed well on the basepaths, with 114 steals over four summers. It also serves him well as he continues to get used to the outfield, something the Reds introduced to Jorge, who initially signed as a shortstop, in 2023. He'll keep getting some ground balls at second base, but look for him more often in center field, where the Reds think he's superior defensively.

The Reds handed out two seven-figure bonuses to outfielders Malvin Valdez and Ariel Almonte when the 2020-21 international signing period finally opened in January 2021. They doled out a half-dozen other six-figure bonuses that January, and it's been Jorge -- signed for $495,000 -- who has been the best performer to date. He showed off his offensive potential right out of the gate with an OPS north of 1.000 in the Dominican Summer League after signing, performed well in the Arizona Complex League in 2022 and then hit his way from Single-A to High-A in 2023.

A left-handed hitter who has added a good amount of strength to his 5-foot-10 frame, Jorge has exhibited a solid overall line-drive approach at every stop since signing. He uses the whole field and can drive the ball to the gaps with some extra-base authority. He has plus speed and he's stolen at least 27 bases in each of his three summers of pro ball heading into 2024.

While he was originally signed as a shortstop, Jorge's only chance to stay on the dirt defensively is at second base. He has decent enough hands and instincts to stay there, but the Reds started having him dabble in center field last year. He'll split time between second and center in 2024, with the new spot helping his athleticism play at the upper levels while perhaps providing some positional versatility to get his bat to Cincinnati faster.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 45 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

The Reds signed Jorge out of the Dominican Republic for $495,000 right when the delayed 2020-21 international signing period opened in January 2021. He wasted no time making a strong first impression, finishing with a 1.015 OPS in the Dominican Summer League and landing among the league leaders in a host of offensive categories. He made a fairly strong transition to the United States and the Arizona Complex League in 2022.

Small with a compact build, Jorge looks like he might be an impactful offensive player. He's an excellent athlete who plays with a lot of energy. A left-handed hitter with a line-drive stroke, Jorge uses the entire field and can shoot the ball to the gaps, with the chance to develop into an average hitter or better with better strike zone awareness. He's added a lot of strength to his smaller frame, and while he likely won't have a ton of home run thump, there is extra-base power in there. At least an above-average runner, he's aggressive and has good instincts on the basepaths, making him a threat to run.

Initially signed as a shortstop, Jorge has shifted over to second base and possesses the hands and instincts to stay on the dirt, though some feel he could end up at third or perhaps the outfield in the future. The Reds think he could be a big league regular at second, one with four solid tools, though it might take a while for him to get there.
