Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Cauley isn't a tremendously physical player, but he plays with the swagger of a bigger guy a la Dustin Pedroia. And while his listed 5-foot-10 height may be a bit generous, he's one of the more advanced hitters in the high school class, runs well and has a good chance to stick at shortstop. He sparked Barbers Hill (Mont Belvieu) to its first-ever Texas 5-A state championship this spring.

Cauley has extremely quick hands and a quality right-handed swing that allow him to make repeated contact. He controls the strike zone well, consistently has competitive at-bats and uses the entire field. His bat speed and deceptive strength give him surprising pop that results in doubles to the gaps and some pull-side home runs.

Regularly clocked in 4.2 seconds from home to first, Cauley has plus speed and uses it aggressively on the bases. The Texas Tech recruit has very good instincts and actions at shortstop, and the only thing that might prevent him from staying there is an arm that grades merely as average. If he has to move, he'd fit nicely at second base or in center field.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 70 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 45

A Texas high school product, Cauley reminded some area scouts of Dustin Pedroia as a small infielder with hitting ability and a ton of swagger. Since signing for an over-slot $1 million as a 2021 third-rounder, he hasn't displayed the same bat-to-ball skills he showed as an amateur but has delighted the Rangers with the rest of his game and constant energy. He slashed .245/.333/.411 with 12 homers, 36 steals and a 31.6 percent strikeout rate between two Class A stops last year, then had more issues making contact in the Arizona Fall League.

Cauley showed a smooth right-handed stroke with plenty of bat speed and good feel for the barrel in high school, but he has gotten too aggressive as a pro. He swings with so much effort and gets overly pull-happy at times, throwing off his timing at the plate, though he hits the ball hard when he connects. He may never hit for a high average but he could provide 20 homers per season with plenty of walks.

A former Texas all-state wide receiver, Cauley can create havoc with plus-plus speed that translated into 84 steals in 95 attempts (88.4 percent) in 201 games during his first three seasons. His quickness also gives him plus range at shortstop, where he has solid arm strength and some issues with throwing accuracy. He's a dynamic and more reliable defender at second base, and has similar upside in center field, where he has yet to play as a pro.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 70 | Arm: 50 | Field: 60 | Overall: 45

With his hitting ability and a lot of swagger packed into a small frame, Cauley reminded some area scouts of Dustin Pedroia during his Texas high school days. After the Rangers signed him for an over-slot $1 million in the third round of the 2021 Draft, he batted just .209/.306/.289 with a 27.5 percent strikeout rate in his first full pro season in Low-A. Though he continues to have issues making consistent contact, he's doing more damage this year and impressing with his defensive ability.

As an amateur, Cauley projected as at least a solid hitter with a smooth right-handed stroke, plenty of bat speed and fine hand-eye coordination. His timing at the plate has been off in pro ball, however, perhaps because he has gotten too aggressive and pull-happy. He has added some strength and is driving the ball with authority more regularly in 2023, and while he might not hit for a high average, he could provide 15 homers per season and draw a decent amount of walks.

Cauley doesn't have to generate a lot of offense to help a team win because he's a difference-maker on the bases and in the field. A former Texas all-state wide receiver, he has double-plus speed and tremendous basestealing aptitude. He covers plenty of ground at shortstop, though he has average arm strength and needs to clean up some issues with his throwing accuracy.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 65 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

An all-state wide receiver before he gave up football as a Barbers Hill (Mont Belvieu) senior, Cauley led the Eagles to their first Texas 5-A state championship last spring. With his hitting ability and swagger packed in a frame generously listed at 5-foot-10, he reminded some area scouts of Dustin Pedroia. After signing for an over-slot $1 million in the third round last July, he batted .255 with 10 steals in 24 games in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Though Cauley's hand-eye coordination and smooth right-handed stroke should allow him to make consistent contact, he struck out at a 30 percent clip in his pro debut. It might simply have been a case of trying to do too much, as he got too pull-happy at times. He has enough bat speed and sneaky strength to produce 12-15 homers per season, though he'll need to launch balls more regularly to get there.

A sparkplug built for the top of a batting order, Cauley has well-above-average speed and uses it to wreak havoc on the bases. He has the quickness, actions and instincts to remain at shortstop unless his merely average arm forces a move. He'd profile well athletically and offensively at second base or center field.

2021

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

One of the more advanced hitters in the 2021 high school class, Cauley led Barbers Hill (Mont Belvieu) to its first-ever Texas 5-A state championship as a senior. While his listed 5-foot-10 height may be generous, he plays with the swagger of a bigger guy a la Dustin Pedroia. A third-round pick in July, he passed up a Texas Tech scholarship to sign for an over-slot $1 million.

Cauley's fast hands and smooth right-handed swing enable him to make consistent hard contact. He manages the strike zone well, puts together competitive at-bats and uses the entire field. His bat speed and deceptive strength create some surprising power that translates into doubles to the gaps and home runs to his pull side.

Regularly clocked in 4.2 seconds from home to first, Cauley grades as a plus runner and uses his speed aggressively on the bases. He has keen instincts and good actions at shortstop, where he should be able to remain unless his merely average arm dictates a move. If he has to change positions, he'd profile well at second base or in center field.
