Scouting Report

2020

Manoah was a two-way player out of high school in the Miami area in 2016 but went undrafted and headed to West Virginia. The big right-hander worked more out of the bullpen than in the rotation over his first two seasons but opened a lot of eyes as a starter in the Cape Cod League, leading the circuit in strikeouts. He’s been that pitcher ever since and shot up the Draft boards with a dominant junior season for the Mountaineers. The Blue Jays took Manoah with their No. 11 overall pick, making him the second pitcher to come off the board in the 2019 Draft, and he impressed in his 17 innings in the Northwest League, limited because of his workload at WVU. Manoah posted a 2.65 ERA and walked five, while striking out 27 for the Vancouver Canadians in his pro debut.

A physical beast who's listed at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, Manoah has always shown glimpses of solid power stuff, but without consistency or command of it. That changed this spring as he showed above-average control for most of his junior season. He typically sits in the 94-97 mph range with his fastball, missing a ton of bats thanks to good sink. His slider flashes plus at times and has been a more reliable weapon for him. He has a solid changeup, and though he didn’t need to lean on it much for the Mountaineers it gives him a solid three-pitch mix and he has the ability to throw it for strikes.

Manoah has managed to keep his large frame in sync, thanks to his athleticism and abbreviated windup, and has repeated his delivery in order to fill up the strike zone more effectively. Because he doesn’t have many starts on his resume, he’s a rare college pitcher with projection. With three pitches, power stuff and natural strike-throwing ability, Manoah has all the ingredients needed to become an impactful Major League starter.
