Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 50 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

A true freshman, Henderson pitched McLennan (Texas) CC to the second Junior College World Series championship in school history. He took MVP honors at the Series after winning two eight-inning starts, striking out 14 against Florence-Darlington (S.C.) Tech in the first round and 17 against Central Arizona in the finals. That capped a season in which he led all national juco pitchers in strikeouts (169) and innings (97 2/3) while ranking second in strikeout rate (15.6 per nine innings) and third in ERA (1.66).

Henderson's out pitch is a plus changeup that arrives in the low 80s with tumble and fade. His fastball sat at 88-92 mph for much of the spring but picked up a couple of ticks of velocity and topped out at 95 at the Junior College World Series, and it dodges barrels thanks to high spin rates that produce plenty of armside run. He also can spin a mid-70s curveball with better shape than power.

Though Henderson throws three pitches for strikes and creates deception with a short arm action, he's also an undersized right-hander with no projection remaining. Analytic teams may be more impressed with his fastball than radar guns are, but clubs may want to see how he fares against better competition. He could return to McLennan or follow through on a commitment to Texas A&M if he doesn't sign this summer.

Henderson was the most accomplished JuCo player of the 2021 class as the national leader with 169 strikeouts and the Junior College World Series MVP for McLennan (Texas) CC. The Brewers love their JuCo arms and selected the 5-foot-11 righty in the fourth round that July, signing him for full slot at $497,500. Henderson’s career got off to a rough start when he required elbow surgery in his first pro spring, limiting him to only 13 2/3 innings across seven starts. He was healthier and certainly productive in 2023 with a 2.75 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 106 strikeouts and 26 walks in 78 2/3 frames. His 35.2 percent K rate ranked fourth among 661 Minor Leaguers with at least 70 innings.

The star of the show here is easily Henderson’s changeup, hovering right around 80 mph. It looks a lot like the fastball out of his hand and tumbles late right near the plate, dropping below batters’ flails. The cambio also has tremendous separation off his low-90s fastball. Henderson’s heater doesn’t have standout velocity, but there’s enough ride up in the zone to help him establish a reputation as a north-south pitcher. That fastball-changeup combo has kept Henderson virtually split-resistant in the early stages of his career, but he could use a better slider than the one he barely relies on now.

Henderson features a short arm action but didn’t have an issue throwing strikes in 2023. The bigger question remains his long-term arm and elbow health, and that could be the separator between his place as a backend starter and a two-pitch reliever. The Brewers believe that Henderson could be in line for a bigger profile in 2024 as he builds on last season’s foundation.

Milwaukee’s love of junior college stars extended to Henderson in 2021. The 5-foot-11 right-hander was arguably the most accomplished juco pitcher of his class, having led the nation with 169 strikeouts and 97 2/3 innings pitched at that level in his Draft spring. As if that wasn’t enough, he led McLennan (Texas) CC to a Junior College World Series win and was named Series MVP after fanning 17 in the finals. Milwaukee grabbed Henderson in the fourth round, only to see him undergo non-Tommy John elbow surgery in the spring before his first full season. He returned to the mound in August and made seven starts (13 2/3 innings) for Single-A Carolina, though more soreness forced him to miss the Arizona Fall League.

Henderson was back up to the low-90s, touching 95, with his fastball in his Carolina League comeback, alleviating some concerns about how the velo would play. His best pitch by far remains a low-80s changeup that has impressive tumble and fade on top of the significant separation off the heater. His breaking ball can get a bit slurvy and lacks the bite to make it more than a distant third pitch at this stage.

A high-effort delivery and short arm action already led some evaluators to question whether Henderson was made to last as a starter in the pros, and last year’s injury concerns certainly won’t help. The fastball and changeup could play really well if he does need to move to relief someday, but for now, the three-pitch mix and generally good control provide some hope for Henderson to settle in as a backend starter.

Junior college success stories don’t get much better than Henderson’s last year. The 5-foot-11 right-hander led national juco pitchers in strikeouts (169) and innings pitched (97 2/3) and finished third in ERA (1.66). On the team level, he helped McLennan (Texas) CC capture its second-ever Junior College World Series and was named Series MVP for his efforts that included a 17-K performance against Central Arizona in the finals. The Brewers selected Henderson in the fourth round, signed him for exact slot at $497,500 and then understandably held him from pitching in the summer due to his spring workload. Henderson underwent non-Tommy John elbow surgery before his first full season began and returned with rehab appearances in August.

Henderson’s low-80s changeup earns his strongest reviews for its tumble and fade. He throws 88-92 mph with his heater but is capable of ramping it up to 95, as he did in the Junior College World Series. The fastball also comes with a high spin rate and can jam right-handed bats with its armside movement. A mid-70s curve remains his third pitch but isn’t a particularly powerful one.

The undersized righty throws strikes but features a short arm action and a good amount of effort in his delivery. He has little projection remaining as well, so he isn’t a clear candidate to add velocity in the pro game. Henderson still has a quality three-pitch arsenal that could make him a back-end starter in time, especially if he can come anywhere close to matching his K rates from school.
