In 2016, Southeast Missouri State featured a left-hander who was a priority senior sign and went in the fourth round before rocketing to the big leagues. That scenario is repeating itself five years later with Dodd following in Joey Lucchesi's footsteps. He started his college career as a two-way player at Kankakee (Ill.) CC, winning the Division II Junior College World Series in 2017, but has focused on pitching with the Redhawks. 

The Ohio Valley Conference pitcher of the year, Dodd has a money pitch in his low-80s changeup with good depth, and he'll double up on the plus offering and use it any count. His four-seam fastball has improved from 88-90 mph at Kankakee to 90-93 with a peak of 95 at SEMO, missing bats with high spin rates and riding life. After having well-below-average breaking stuff in junior college, he has developed an average low-80s slider and a fringy-to-average upper-70s curveball. 

A good athlete who repeats his high three-quarters delivery with ease, Dodd has natural feel for throwing strikes and uses his arm slot and 6-foot-3 frame to create downhill plane. Though he'll turn 23 a month before the Draft, his age is less of a factor because he's a left-handed pitcher equipped to move quickly as a pro ball. A tough competitor, he held Arkansas (college baseball's No. 1-ranked team for much of the year) to two runs in six innings while striking out 10 in front of a crowd of scouts in February.

There have been money-saving college senior signs in the Draft bonus pool system who are taken in the top 10 rounds simply to manipulate the pool and afford higher-ticket players. Then there are those who, while saving money, have a legitimate shot at making it to the big leagues. Dodd was identified as being in the latter group as the Draft approached in 2021, signing for way under-slot in the third round with the Braves, but being a ranked prospect. He pitched across three levels in 2022 and while his 2023 wasn’t as dominant, he did spend considerable time in the big leagues.

Dodd’s feel for pitching allowed the left-hander to move quickly and be in position to make the Opening Day roster when the need arose. The left-hander’s stuff is largely average across the board, with a fastball that sits around 92 mph and had played well in the past with decent life and high spin rates, but got hit at the highest level. His changeup and slider are both low-80s offerings and will flash above-average, but also weren’t quite as sharp in 2023. He added a mid-80s cutter that could give him a fourth usable offering.

As Dodd learned in 2023, he doesn’t have a huge margin for error given how his stuff plays. He repeats his delivery well and throws a lot of strikes from a higher arm slot, which helped him reach Atlanta relatively quickly. He’ll have to find another gear in order to stay there, with a ceiling of a back-end starter.

Ever since the Draft bonus pool system began, teams have drafted college seniors in the top 10 rounds as money-savers in order to use their pools to go after tougher-to-sign talent in other rounds. Sometimes there are “priority senior signs,” ones who come at a bargain but are more than that. Dodd fit that description, hitting MLB Pipeline’s Draft Top 250 list as a Southeast Missouri State senior while also saving the Braves money by signing for $122,500 as a third-rounder in 2021. It’s looking like a very savvy selection as the left-hander pitched his way from High-A to Triple-A and led the organization in K/BB and walk percentage last season. 

In many ways, particularly the feel for pitching without wow stuff, Dodd is like the left-handed version of fellow Braves prospect Darius Vines. While Dodd’s fastball sits around 92 mph, it’s a bit more playable than Vines’ heater because it has more life and higher spin to it. He throws his changeup and slider in the low 80s, and both are at least above-average offerings. The former has good depth and deception, and the latter is a sweeper that also misses bats. He can fold in a slower curve as well.

A former two-way player, Dodd’s athleticism is an asset on the mound, helping him repeat his delivery and higher arm slot, which leads to an ability to fill up the strike zone. That’s enabled him to move quickly through the system, and he’s close to reaching his ceiling as a No. 4 or 5-type starter in a big league rotation.

In his second professional season went 12-9 with a combined 3.36 ERA in 26 starts between three levels of the Braves farm system. Went 9-5 with a 3.44 ERA (34 ER/89.0) in 16 starts with High-A Rome…Was named the South Atlantic Pitcher of the Week (5/20) after tossing a combined 13.0 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts between two starts. Pitched to a 3.11 ERA (16 ER/ 46.1 IP) with 55 strikeouts in nine starts with Double-A Mississippi. Made one start with Triple-A Gwinnett on 9/25 … Allowed three runs in 6.2 innings pitched in his G-Stripers debut.

He’ll throw them at any point in the count and trusts the off-speed pitch enough to double up. He’s added some velocity since his junior college days, sitting in the 90-93 mph range and occasionally reaching back for a tick or two more with his high spin-rate fastball that misses bats with good riding life. He has two distinct breaking pitches, with his low-80s slider a bit better than his upper-70s curve.

Dodd has shown an ability to repeat his delivery and high three-quarters arm slot consistently, which should allow him to keep throwing strikes. His best outcome is as a back-end starter, but his feel for pitching could allow him to move pretty quickly through the system.
