Signed for just $35,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2020, Monegro has compiled a 2.57 ERA and 33 percent strikeout rate since arriving in full-season ball in mid-2023. After shoulder weakness cost him most of the first two months of the 2024 season, he rebounded to not permit an earned run in his final 41 2/3 frames. He was thriving in Double-A last year when he blew out his elbow in June and had Tommy John surgery that will sideline him for all of 2026.
Monegro spins the ball better than most Red Sox farmhands, producing upper-80s sliders/cutters and low-80s curveball that are hard to lay off and just as difficult to hit. He got overly slider-happy last year, preferring it to his two- and four-seam fastballs that both operate around 93-95 mph with a peak of 97. He also shows feel for an upper-80s splitter that serves as his changeup.
Monegro has improved his control as he has cleaned up his delivery, and he has enough pitches and strikes to make it as a starter. He found more success with his fastball by emphasizing his sinking two-seamer over his fairly straight four-seamer, and he did a better job of maintaining his velocity before he got hurt. If he winds up in the bullpen, his stuff could tick up and give him the upside of a setup man.

Monegro turned pro for $35,000 out of the Dominican Republic in February 2020, a month before the pandemic shutdown that delayed his pro debut until the following year. He has thrived since arriving in full-season ball in mid-2023, logging a 2.55 ERA with 155 strikeouts in 116 2/3 innings between two Class A stops. After shoulder weakness cost him most of the first two months of last season, he went 41 2/3 consecutive frames without allowing an earned run from in the final two months.
Monegro added a mid-80s slider/cutter in 2023 and it added depth and became his best pitch last year, though he fell in love with it so much that he used it 44 percent at the time. His four-seam fastball ranges from 92-96 mph early in games, but it loses velocity and lacks good shape, so he has begun using a low-90s two-seamer more often. His upper-70s curveball once ranked as the best in the system but has regressed since he started favoring his slider, while his improving upper-80s splitter/changeup is becoming an effective chase pitch.
Though Monegro has size and athleticism in his favor and has toned down his delivery while improving his control, there are questions about whether he can survive as a long-term starter. He pitches backwards because his fastballs don't have much movement or deception, so he needs to find more life or add velocity as he continues to fill out his 6-foot-4 frame. If he can't, he'll probably be a slider-heavy reliever, and those concerns contributed to the Red Sox not protecting him on the 40-man roster during the offseason.

Monegro signed for $35,000 out of the Dominican Republic in February 2020, a month before the pandemic shutdown that pushed his pro debut to 2021. He reached full-season ball last June, pitching 18 straight scoreless innings upon arriving in Single-A. He posted a 2.06 ERA, .194 average-against and 93 strikeouts in 65 2/3 frames between three levels during the regular season and won his lone playoff start to help High-A Greenville capture the South Atlantic League championship.
Monegro carved up lower-level hitters with one of the best curveballs in the system, an upper-70s bender with true 12-6 break that's effective against both lefties and righties. His four-seam fastball will range from 92-96 mph in the early innings, but it drops off later in games and lacks life, so he has begun to fiddle with a two-seamer as well. He also added an average mid-80s slider/cutter in 2023 but didn't make much progress with an upper-80s changeup that lacks velocity separation and life.
The downside to Monegro's curveball is that he falls in love with it at the expense of developing is other offerings. He did improve his delivery and strike-throwing last season, adding to hope that he can become a No. 4 or 5 starter. There's still projection remaining in his athletic 6-foot-4 frame, so he could add velocity and boost his ceiling.

The last pitcher signed by the Red Sox in their 2019-20 international class, Monegro turned pro for $35,000 out of the Dominican Republic in February 2020. The pandemic delayed his pro debut until 2021, and he didn't reach full-season ball until this June, beginning his Single-A stint with 18 straight shutout innings. In a system thin on pitching prospects, his emergence this summer has been a welcome development.
Monegro may have the best curveball among Red Sox farmhands, an upper-70s downer with good depth that wipes out lower-level hitters from both sides of the plate. His fastball sits at 91-94 mph and tops out at 96 but can straighten out, so he needs to locate it up in the zone. He falls in love with his curve at the expense of working on his changeup, which is too firm in the upper 80s.
Monegro is still a work in progress but has improved his delivery and his strike-throwing in 2023. There's still projection remaining in his 6-foot-4 frame, so he could gain more velocity. He'll need time to add polish but could blossom into a No. 4 starter.
