Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 40 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Rivas earned NCAA Division II All-America accolades at Indianapolis in 2022 before transferring to Mississippi, where he was the Rebels' best starter as a junior before missing all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery. The Yankees still drafted him in the 16th round because they were intrigued by the deception of his pitches. He returned to the mound last year and recorded a 3.38 ERA with a .166 average-against and a 31 percent strikeout rate while advancing from Rookie ball to High-A.

Rivas doesn't fool hitters with a riding fastball that sits at 90 mph and maxes out at 92, but he utilizes it well enough to set up a pair of baffling secondary pitches. He does an excellent job of killing spin on a low-80s changeup with splitter action that generated a 41 percent chase rate and 57 percent swing-and-miss rate in his pro debut. Hitters also consistently swung over the top of his tight low-80s slider.

Though Rivas spent his first pro season as a starter, he profiles better as a tricky left-handed reliever. He has to nibble with his below-average heater and get chases with his slider and changeup, so only a third of his pitches landed in the strike zone last year. His competitive makeup also would work well out of the bullpen.
