Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 30 | Arm: 55 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Scouts and recruiters mostly ignored Bush when he was a Texas prepster, but he went in the 16th round of the 2023 Draft after slashing .357/.510/.615 as a freshman at Tyler (Texas) JC. He earned High-A South Atlantic League all-star honors last year, though his OPS dropped from .812 there to .671 after he was promoted to Double-A in early August. He profiles as an offensive-minded backup catcher.

The strength in Bush's 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame and the loft in his left-handed stroke give him solid to plus raw power that translates into high exit velocities and plays to all fields. He could provide 20 homers on an annual basis if he makes enough contact, though he has to prove he can catch up to quality fastballs and handle spin. Strikeouts will always be part of his package, though his patient approach also yields a fair amount of walks.

Bush needs reps behind the plate to improve receiving and blocking skills, but those were hard to come by when he played alongside 2024 first-rounder Walker Janek in High-A. He's a well-below-average runner who isn't very agile as a catcher or at first base. His solid arm strength is his best defensive attribute, though he needs to improve his throwing accuracy after erasing just 17 percent of basestealers last year.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 30 | Arm: 55 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Bush didn't attract much attention from scouts or recruiters as a Texas high schooler, so he ventured to Tyler (Texas) JC. After he slashed .357/.510/.615 as a freshman in 2023, the Astros signed him for $150,000 in the 16th round. He has swung one of the more potent bats in the High-A South Atlantic League this season.

Bush stands out as a catcher with left-handed power. He hits balls hard and has a penchant for driving them in the air, and he could provide 20 homers annually if he makes enough contact. He has a reasonably disciplined approach and is doing a better job of using the entire field in 2025, though he struggles against sliders.

Almost all of Bush's value will come from his bat. He's a well-below-average runner who will have to upgrade his receiving and blocking skills to be able to handle big league pitchers, and he's a substandard defender at first base as well. He does have solid arm strength, though it hasn't translated into throwing out basestealers, and his pitching staffs love his personality.
