Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Scouts, and in turn big league organizations, are almost always willing to roll the dice on switch-hitting shortstops who offer tons of projection, and the 6-foot-1 Calcaño falls into that bucket. Having played from a very young age, he shows an advanced feel for game action and scenarios, with his prospect profile coming together at the right time as he begins to put on weight and fill out physically.

Whereas many young prospects often have one side of the dish at which they excel, Calcaño is balanced in his right- and left-handed production. He rests the bat on his back shoulder before starting his stride, which has a slight front toe tap. He has long performed -- and excelled -- on the tournament circuit throughout the Dominican Republic, giving him an established track record to go along with an ample amount of projection.

While the offensive component of his game remains a work in progress, Calcaño will be a surefire shortstop as he gets his pro career underway. He displays plus hands and a plus throwing arm, which will give him a runway for his bat to catch up, especially since he will play the entire 2025 regular season as a 17-year-old.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

The Royals signed three of MLB Pipeline’s Top 50 international prospects in this year’s class: catcher Moises Marchán (No. 31), shortstop Calcaño (No. 38) and shortstop Ramcell Medina (No. 49). Calcaño -- a native of the Dominican Republic --- signed for the largest bonus of the group at $1,847,500, almost double the next highest mark (Medina, $947,500). He played nine games in the Dominican Summer League before injuring his shoulder in a freak collision, but he is expected to be good for fall instructs.

The part of Calcaño’s game that excited evaluators most as he entered pro ball was on the defensive side. He has exceptional hands for the shortstop position, and with good speed, he has the range needed to stick at the six. Plus arm strength will certainly help that case as he climbs the ladder. During an international introductory press conference back in January, Royals senior vice president of Major League and international operations Rene Francisco said Calcaño reminded him of Marcelo Mayer at a similar age -- notable considering Mayer was considered a plus defender when he went fourth overall in the 2021 Draft.

Unlike the Red Sox infielder, Calcaño is a switch-hitter. He has a longer road of development ahead at the plate and has the biggest room to grow on the power side as he fills out his 6-foot-1 frame. He was a fairly balance performer from both sides as an amateur but barely got to hit righty in those early DSL looks. The glovework gives Calcaño a better floor than many international signees out of the gate, and he still won’t turn 18 until October 2025.
