Nebraska hasn't had a high school player drafted since 2019 but that should change with Lewis, who might sneak into the supplemental first round and become the state's highest prep position player selection ever. He got stronger and faster heading into his senior season and dazzled at the Super 60 Pro Showcase in February, recording the quickest 60-yard dash (6.4 seconds) and finishing at or near the top of most of the athletic testing categories. He has shown increased pop in game action while leading Millard West HS (Omaha) to its second state Class A championship in three years and winning Gatorade Nebraska high school player of the year honors.
Lewis has a quick left-handed stroke and is driving the ball harder and more consistently than he has in the past. He can get overly pull-happy as he looks to tap into more power and comes with some swing-and-miss concerns. He tends to tinker with his batting stance, but if everything comes together, he could develop into a .260 hitter with 20 homers per season.
Lewis' 60-yard time translates more into solid-to-plus speed on the diamond, where he's aggressive on the bases and rangy at shortstop. The Arkansas recruit has inconsistent hands and actions on defense, and he doesn't always cut throws loose and make the most of his solid arm strength. If he can't stick at short, he would profile well at second or third base.

There has been just one position player from Nebraska to get drafted and signed out of high school and make it to the big leagues: Jackson Reetz, a Nationals third-rounder back in 2014. Lewis hopes to be the next one after becoming the highest-drafted prep hitter ever from the Cornhusker State when the Reds went over-slot to sign him in the second round of the 2024 Draft. As Cincinnati often does with young hitters, Lewis was sent to the Arizona Complex League to kick things off in 2025, earning ACL All-Star honors before struggling with contact following a promotion to full-season Daytona.
A physical and athletic left-handed hitter, Lewis can hit the ball as hard as just about anyone in the Reds’ system, with a max exit velocity of over 112 mph during his time in the Florida State League. He’s a very aggressive hitter who likes to attack early in the count and that got him into trouble when he moved up to a higher level. He had a 41 percent miss rate and 45 percent chase rate, per Synergy, in his 35 games with Daytona. The Reds feel more reps will enable him to hone in on a better overall approach and hit with two strikes so he can get to his considerable raw power more consistently.
Lewis is a plus runner who is a threat to steal and his athleticism plays well defensively. With enough arm strength, he has a chance to stick at shortstop, and he continues to work on other parts of his game on the dirt. He was introduced to third base during instructs, and he should continue to see time at both spots during his age-20 season.

In 2023, the Reds took a high school shortstop in the second round and went over slot to sign Sammy Stafura away from his college commitment. They repeated the exercise in 2024 when they made Lewis Nebraska’s highest prep position player ever, signing the Gatorade Nebraska High School player of the year to a $3.05 million bonus to keep him from heading to Arkansas. He didn’t make his pro debut after signing but has already made a good impression among the staff over the fall and offseason.
A left-handed hitter with a quick stroke, Lewis was hitting the ball harder and having more success driving it during his senior year of high school compared to the past. As the power started to come, he did get a little pull-happy to get to it more, leading some to worry about strikeouts. He’s a tinkerer with his stance but has the chance to be a solid hitter with at least average power in the future.
Lewis clocks in with plus run times and he likes to use his speed on the basepaths. It also helps him cover plenty of ground at shortstop, where the Reds plan to play him for the foreseeable future. There’s work to be done on his hands, actions and release on his throws, but he could profile well at another infield position if short doesn’t work out. The work he put in during the offseason impressed the Reds’ strength and conditioning group; now he’ll get to put that work to use in his first full season.

Added strength and speed heading into his senior season helped his profile, and he led his Millard West HS team to its second state Class A championship in three years. The Gatorade Nebraska High School Player of the Year got a well-above-slot $3.05 million bonus to forego his commitment to Arkansas.
