Ball State produced a pitcher who went in the top four rounds of each of the last three Drafts: Diamondbacks first-rounder Drey Jameson (2019), Marlins second-rounder Kyle Nicolas (2020) and Astros fourth-rounder Chayce McDermott (2021). Schweitzer doesn’t light up the radar gun like they can but could approach the same territory this July. A reliever in his first two seasons with the Cardinals, he won Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year honors as a starter this spring and finished second in NCAA Division I with 11 victories.

Schweitzer’s fastball parks around 90 mph and only occasionally reaches the mid-90s, but it gets swings and misses up in the strike zone with its induced vertical break and high spin rates. He backs it up with three average secondary pitches, the most effective of which is his upper-70s slider with two-plane depth. Both his slider and slower, more downward-breaking curveball can be plus offerings at their best. 

Schweitzer also utilizes a low-80s changeup with depth against right-handers. He has significantly improved his control and command this year while holding up well in his first season as a college starter. His feel for mixing his pitches and locations adds to his package as a high-floor, back-of-the-rotation type.

Schweitzer won Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year accolades after ranking second in NCAA Division I with 11 victories in 2022. He followed future big leaguers Drey Jameson, Kyle Nicolas and Chayce McDermott to give Ball State its fourth top-five-round pitcher in five Drafts when the White Sox popped him in the fifth round that July. One of the most consistent starters in the system, he logged a 4.02 ERA with a 136/41 K/BB ratio in 132 innings between High-A and Double-A last year.

After his fastball operated around 90 mph in college, Schweitzer has gotten stronger and now sits at 91-93 with a high of 96, and it plays up thanks to high spin rates that create carry. His slider also has gotten hotter, averaging 84 mph last year compared to 79 mph in 2022, and flashes as a solid offering with two-plane depth at times. He keeps hitters off balance by mixing in an upper-70s curveball and a too-firm changeup in the mid-80s with more downhill plane than life.

Schweitzer walks a fine line by throwing consistent strikes without catching too much of the plate with his decidedly average stuff. He mixes his offerings and locations well, giving him the chance to crack the back of a big league rotation. He's not very physical but has proven very durable and efficient in three years as a college and pro starter.

Part of a Ball State pitching pipeline that produced top-five-rounds picks in four straight Drafts, Schweitzer won Mid-American Conference pitcher of the year honors while ranking second in NCAA Division I with 11 victories in 2022. A fifth-rounder that July, he successfully navigated two Class A stops in his pro debut last year. He earned a promotion to Double-A two months into the 2024 season.

Known more for his polish than his stuff when he entered pro ball, Schweitzer has gotten stronger and so has his fastball. After sitting around 90 mph in college, his heater now operates at 91-93 and touches 95-96 more often, and its effectiveness is enhanced by high spin rates and induced vertical break. He supplements his sneaky fastball with a trio of average secondary pitches, the best of which is a low-80s slider that grades as plus at times with two-plane depth.

Schweitzer also throws an upper-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup that features more downhill plane than life and can get too firm. Though he's not very physical, he has been durable and efficient since moving into the rotation at Ball State two years ago. His feel for mixing pitches and locations and his mound presence adds to his high floor as a back-of-the-rotation starter.
