Musgrove played both ways at the NAIA program at the University of Mobile, and in his three years with the Rams, he finished with a .398/.505/.668 line over 489 plate appearances and a 4.70 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. The Padres took him in the seventh round in 2023, signing him for just below slot at $175,000, and initially intended to keep him on a two-way path. However, Musgrove underwent Tommy John surgery soon after signing and didn’t appear in a game for a San Diego affiliate until April 2025, by that time cementing his place as a pitcher-only. He managed 20 innings for Single-A Lake Elsinore (striking out 26 in that span) before continuing to build up with six more appearances in the Arizona Fall League.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander can run his fastball up to triple-digits, and he has a few of them – a four-seamer with good riding action up in the zone and a sinker that can equally come in the 97-99 mph range over shorter outings with more armside run. He also possesses a cutter for another fastball look. Musgrove pitches with upwards of seven feet of extension, shortening the decision window further for hitters. He can spin a mid-80s sweeper with impressive horizontal break and can mix in another slider with more vertical drop and a slower curveball in the low-80s. After dropping a splitter, he’s working on a rarely thrown changeup.

Dating back to his days as a collegiate center fielder, Musgrove has athleticism to work with on the mound but is still finding his command post-surgery. He’s come back stronger though and with enough velocity to garner attention across the game in his initial relief looks.
