Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

The son of Greg W. Harris, who pitched eight seasons in the Majors, Harris spent three years at High Point as a third-baseman/right-hander before his elbow blew out in 2021 and required Tommy John surgery. He missed most of the next season after transferring to NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke, then performed well as a fifth-year senior in 2023 but went undrafted because he was 24 years old. After he earned Coastal Plain League pitcher of the year honors that summer, the Giants signed him for $10,000 as a nondrafted free agent, and he zoomed to Triple-A midway through his second full pro season.

Harris' over-the-top arm slot allows him to stay on top of his 79-82 mph curveball and impart tremendous depth, though his bender wasn't as sharp or effective after he got to Triple-A, leading to problems against left-handers. His arm angle also produces difficult carry and ride on a fastball that ranges from 93-97 mph. His mid-80s slider has similar shape to his curveball, and he'll mix in a low-80s splitter on rare occasions.

Harris uses his athleticism to get down the mound well and create a highly unusual combination of a high release point and quality extension. He has thrown strikes throughout his college and pro career, and he didn't stop challenging hitters when he ran into some adversity in Triple-A. San Francisco has toyed with the idea of trying him as a starter but decided he'd be best off as a multi-inning reliever.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45

The son of former big league pitcher Greg W. Harris, Harris played three years at High Point as a third baseman/right-hander before his elbow gave out in 2021 and required Tommy John surgery. He transferred to NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke, missed most of the next season before performing well as a two-way player in 2023, going undrafted in large part because he was 24 years old. Signed as a nondrafted free agent for $10,000 after he earned Coastal Plain League pitcher of the year accolades that summer while topping the circuit with a 0.30 ERA, he posted a 1.52 ERA and a 36 percent strikeout rate while advancing to Double-A in his first year-plus as a pro.

Harris's fastball explodes on hitters, coming out of an over-the-top arm slot and arriving at 94-97 mph with tremendous carry and riding action. His 79-82 mph curveball and 83-85 mph slider both play very well off his heater thanks to their quality depth, with his curve slightly more effective and grading as well above-average at times. He has shown a low-80s changeup with some fade and tumble in the past but has mostly scrapped it in pro ball.

Harris is athletic and gets down the mound extremely well, creating a combination of a high slot and quality extension that is highly unusual. He has provided strikes throughout his college and pro career, and he shouldn't need much more time in the Minors. The Giants are tempted to try him as a starter, though he might be best suited for overpowering hitters for two or three innings at a time.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

The son of former big league pitcher Greg W. Harris, Trent spent 2019-21 as a third baseman/right-hander at High Point before blowing out his elbow in his third season and requiring Tommy John surgery. He transferred to NCAA Division II UNC Pembroke and performed well on both sides of the ball yet went undrafted as a 24-year-old in 2023. He earned Coastal Plain League pitcher of the year that summer while leading the circuit with a 0.30 ERA, prompting San Francisco to sign him for $10,000 as a free agent. He has dominated as a multi-inning reliever in his first year-plus in pro ball.

Harris features an explosive mid-90s fastball that reaches 97 mph with tremendous carry out of an over-the-top arm slot. His delivery helps him stay on top of a pair of potential plus breaking pitches with high spin rates, a tight 83-85 mph slider and a 79-82 mph curveball with more depth. He also has a low-80s changeup with some fade and tumble but has barely used it as a pro.

A quality athlete, Harris gets down the mound extremely well and his high slot gives hitters an unusual look. He has a long track record of providing strikes and has all the ingredients to become a starting pitcher. The Giants will see if he can maintain his stuff if they stretch him out in the rotation, and if he can't, they could expedite him to the Majors as a reliever.
