The Orioles think they might be in the process of unearthing a diamond in the rough from their 2022 international class in Sosa, who signed for $400,000 out of the Dominican Republic. Sosa flashed enough potential in the Florida Complex League the next year that the Orioles began challenging him, assigning Sosa to affiliates where he has routinely been one of the youngest players. He seems destined for a big league role of some kind after reaching Double-A in 2025 as a 20-year-old.

Sosa is a left-handed-hitting, left-handed-throwing outfielder with size, projectable power and upside, garnering early comparisons to former Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco. He consistently registers some of the organization’s best 90th percentile exit velocities and hard-hit rates, though issues making contact and with his approach have made the power slow to show up in games so far. He proved to be a better runner than expected by stealing 30 bases in 2024, but was limited on the bases last year due to a knee injury.

Defensively, Sosa became more or less a full-time corner outfielder last season and seems suited to right field, where his plus throwing arm profiles well. Otherwise, this is a bat-first skillset, with Sosa’s ceiling dependent on the extent to which he can polish his approach and develop into a well-rounded hitter, rather than a panoply of pop and potential.

Sosa wasn’t one of the highest-ranked players in the 2022 international class and didn’t get an earth-shattering signing bonus ($400,000), but the Orioles feel they may have struck gold with the Villa Mella, Dominican Republic, native. After a forgettable debut, Sosa turned heads in the Florida Complex League in 2023 and performed well at Single-A Delmarva in '24. He earned a late-season promotion to High-A Aberdeen but experienced growing pains there as a 19-year-old.

Sosa has been compared to former Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco because he is a left-handed-hitting, left-handed-throwing outfielder with size, projectable power and intriguing upside. He generates loud contact and produces high exit velocities with probably plus raw power, though it's yet to really show up in games because Sosa’s swing and approach remain unrefined. He’s already gotten bigger and stronger since signing, with room to add more size and strength, and Sosa also might be a better runner than expected after totaling 30 stolen bases in 93 games in his first season stateside.

Defensively, Sosa gets reps at all three outfield positions, including center field, though he’s probably destined for a corner. His plus arm strength profiles well for right field. Sosa is raw enough that there is still real risk here, but his skill set is the kind that could develop into a bat-first regular if a few things go right, and a star if everything clicks.

A native of Villa Mella, Dominican Republic, Sosa signed with the Orioles for $400,000 at the start of the 2022 international signing period. He didn’t hit much in his Dominican Summer League debut that summer but began turning heads in 2023 in the Florida Complex League, where he showed an intriguing mix of upside and production as part of a talented Baltimore club. 

A left-handed hitting, lefty-throwing outfielder, Sosa draws comparisons to former Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco for his size, build, stance and makeup. He is long and lanky with a solid approach and flashes of line-drive power that should increase as his body fills out. That’s already begun to happen as he’s grown a lot in the two years since signing, adding at least 3 inches and 20 pounds. He’s a solid runner at this point with good instincts on the bases. 

A natural center fielder, Sosa got experience at all three outfield spots last year and could potentially move to a corner one day. If that happens, he has the power and arm strength to profile well at either left or right.
