Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 20 | Arm: 50 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

Thach could have started his pro career out of high school when the Giants took him in the 18th round in 2022, but the great-nephew of Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter headed to UNC Wilmington instead. He's all over the Seahawks' record books, setting the freshman home run mark (15) in 2023 and then the single-season record with 27 as a sophomore. The power kept showing up with wood bats in the Cape Cod League (eight homers), but enthusiasm dampened a bit when the pop didn't show up as much in 2025. Still, his 54 career homers are a school record, and the Rockies took a flier in the eighth round of last summer's Draft, going a bit over slot to bring him into the fold. He got off to a very good start during his first full season of pro ball with Single-A Fresno.

The big left-handed hitter offers an intriguing combination of strength and bat speed coming from his 6-foot-4 frame that provides optimism he can send the ball a long way and catch up to good velocity. He hits the ball very hard, registering high exit velocities and his well-above-average raw power can show up to all fields, though most of his home run thump comes to his pull side. He doesn't strike out a ton, especially given his power, but he does chase out of the zone too much, something that will have to improve as he moves up the ladder.

A former two-way player who was up to 90 mph on the mound, Thach's well-below-average speed almost certainly limits him to first base, though he has seen a little time in right field as a pro. He'll have to keep getting to that raw pop to profile well in either corner spot.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 20 | Arm: 50 | Field: 40 | Overall: 40

The great-nephew of Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter, Thach turned down the Giants as an 18th-rounder in 2022 to attend UNC Wilmington. He set the Seahawks' freshman home run record with 15 in 2023 before erasing the overall mark with 27 in '24. His power plays with wood bats as well, as he finished third in the Cape Cod League with eight homers last summer. It disappeared for much of 2025, but the Rockies liked the power potential enough to take him in the eighth round of the Draft.

UNCW's career leader with 54 homers, Thach packs plenty of strength into his 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame and also has enough bat speed to do damage against velocity. He generates high exit velocities and his well-above-average raw power works to all parts of the ballpark, though he rarely uses the opposite field. While he doesn't strike out excessively, teams exploited his tendency to chase pitches this past spring, and he has trouble doing damage against breaking pitches.

Thach has bottom-of-the-scale speed but is a better athlete than that might indicate. He plays a decent first base and has pitched on occasion. His fastball sits around 90 mph and he complements it with a low-80s slider.
