Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

The Blue Jays signed Hechavarria, a Cuba native, out of the Dominican Republic in June 2024, nearly three months after his 21st birthday. He got his feet wet in the Dominican Summer League shortly thereafter with the results one would expect for an older arm in that circuit (1.84 ERA, 57 strikeouts in 49 innings) and jumped stateside for 2025, first in the FCL before moving to Single-A and High-A. With a combined 2.28 ERA and strong peripherals over 86 2/3 innings, Hechavarria’s second season as a pro was a success in nearly every way.

Hechavarria stands 6-foot-4, bringing plenty of mound presence, and he throws from a high release. His four-seam fastball touches 96-97 mph and is generally 93-95 with good carry out of the high slot with some armside run to boot. He’ll mix in a sinker around the same velo for a different look, too. An upper-80s slider actually acts as his primary weapon. It’s a tight offering with less than an inch of gloveside movement on average and it tunnels well off the heaters until it’s too late, diving below bats. It gets a ton of whiffs against lefties, helping Hechavarria run reverse splits despite a subpar changeup.

Coming off a nice jump in workload, the Blue Jays could look to push Hechavarria past 100 innings this season, and he’s ready to be challenged more. He has seemed to improve as the seasons went on -- and with each promotion in 2025 -- which left the Blue Jays very impressed. If Hechavarria can miss more bats, this is a different conversation entirely, but he currently profiles as a back-end starter who could eat some serious innings.

The Blue Jays signed Hechavarria, a Cuba native, out of the Dominican Republic in June 2024, three months after his 21st birthday. He got his feet wet in the Dominican Summer League shortly thereafter with the results one would expect for an older arm in that circuit (1.84 ERA, 57 strikeouts in 49 innings) and jumped stateside for 2025, first in the Florida Complex League and by June, the Florida State League. He’s been even better at generating strikeouts at his first full-season level and has caught the eye of Blue Jays evaluators with each passing outing.

Hechavarria stands at 6-foot-4, bringing plenty of mound presence, and throws from a high release. His four-seam fastball touches 96-97 mph and is generally 93-95 with good carry out of the high slot and some armside run to boot. He’ll mix in a sinker variety around the same velo too for a different look. An upper-80s slider actually acts as his primary weapon. It’s a tight offering with less than an inch of gloveside movement on average and tunnels well off the heaters until it’s too late, diving below bats. It gets a ton of whiffs against lefties, helping Hechavarria run severe reverse splits.

The righty also sports a mid-80s changeup that can get too firm and is pretty hittable in the zone. Because Hechavarria doesn’t have wild movement, he can spot his pitches well, both for called strikes and to elicit chase. He’s already the age of an American college senior, so he needs to be challenged soon and prove he can work deeper into games to become a split-proof backend starter in the bigs.
