Ever since the Orioles re-entered the international market by signing him for $1.3 million back in January 2021, Basallo has made it look like a worthwhile investment, especially at the plate. He really jumped up the rankings with a 2023 campaign, played largely at age 18, that ended in Double-A with 20 homers and a .953 OPS. He hit 19 more homers while playing in the Futures Game and reaching Triple-A in 2024, and then posted a robust .966 OPS back with Norfolk in 2025 en route to making his big league debut just days after his 21st birthday.
It’s pretty clear Basallo’s left-handed bat is ready for the big leagues. The 6-foot-4 masher routinely finds the barrel and has some of the best exit velocity data of any prospect in the Minors, with numbers like a max EV of 115.9 mph and his 90th percentile EV (108.2 mph) particularly standing out. While he draws a lot of walks, he can chase a bit too much at times, but much of that stems from his innate ability to make hard contact. He’s made strides there, too, and his plus arm helped him throw out 33.1 percent of potential basestealers a year ago. There’s still work to be done on his overall receiving, but his bat will profile just fine at first base, where he’s been getting comfortable defensively to provide some positional flexibility, especially with Adley Rutschman behind the dish in Baltimore.
