Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Though he could have turned pro as early as January 2021, Burrowes waited until he nearly completed high school in Panama before signing for $75,000 in April 2022, and he returned home after his pro debut that summer to finish his degree. He broke his hand when hit by a pitch during Spring Training in 2024, which led to a disappointing first foray into full-season ball. He rebounded last year and also improved his effort level, earning a promotion to High-A at age 20.

Burrowes has a quick right-handed stroke, makes reasonable swing decisions and hits the ball hard for his age. He does damage against fastballs and consistently turns on pitches, with most of his power playing to left field. He chases too many breaking balls and changeups and struggles to put them in play, so he'll have to make adjustments.

Burrowes has plus speed and is an aggressive baserunner who stole 47 bases in 53 attempts (88.6 percent) last year. After spending most of his first two seasons in the United States at shortstop, where the game sped up on him, he looked more comfortable at second and third base in 2025. He has solid arm strength and also has seen action in left and center field. He could fill a super-utility role if he can become a more reliable hitter.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Eligible to turn pro in January 2021, Burrowes instead waited to nearly finish high school before signing for $75,000 in April 2022. Other clubs began asking for him in trade talks once he made his pro debut that summer, after which he returned home in the fall to complete his high school degree. An errant pitch broke his hand in Spring Training in 2024 and negatively affected him at the plate, but he has rebounded this year and earned a promotion to High-A at age 20.

Burrowes has the tools to produce at the plate, displaying an efficient right-handed stroke with bat speed, making reasonable swing decisions and hitting the ball hard for his age. He pounds fastballs and has no difficulty turning on pitches, with most of his power going to his pull side. He'll need to make adjustments against breaking pitches and changeups after having little success against them in Class A.

Burrows possesses plus speed and is an aggressive basestealer with a high success rate. He spent most of his first two seasons in the United States at shortstop, where the game speeds up on him, and has looked more comfortable and seen more action at second and third base in 2025. He has solid arm strength and also has gotten some time in left and center field this year. He's bilingual and the White Sox praise his intelligence, maturity and leadership skills.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Though he was eligible to turn pro in January 2021, Burrowes waited to nearly finish high school in Panama before signing for $75,000 in April 2022. He attracted immediate attention when he made his pro debut two months later in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, with other clubs asking for him in trade talks. He completed his high school degree that fall before coming to the United States and hitting .259/.330/.386 in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League last summer.

Burrowes already produces impressive exit velocities for a teenagers and has the room to add a lot of muscle to his wiry 6-foot-2 frame. He has a sound right-handed swing with bat speed but is still a work in progress offensively. He was overly aggressive in his U.S. debut and wasn't able to turn on pitches consistently.

Burrowes owns plus speed and likes to make things happen on the bases. His quickness gives him range at shortstop, where he displays solid arm strength but also a tendency to get flashy. An organization favorite, he's bilingual and stands out with his intelligence and leadership.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Eligible to sign in January 2021, Burrowes waited until he had nearly finished high school in Panama before turning pro for $75,000 last April. He made his pro debut two months later and immediately stood out in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, prompting other clubs to ask for him in trade talks. He returned home in the fall to complete his high school degree and will make his highly anticipated U.S. debut in 2023.

Burrows' advanced hitting ability and projectable 6-foot-2 frame give him one of the highest offensive ceilings in the system. He recognizes pitches and manages the strike zone better than most teenagers, repeatedly barreling balls with a sound right-handed swing. He generates high exit velocities for someone so young and could develop at least 20-homer power as he gains strength and experience.

A solid runner with good instincts on the bases, Burrowes went 12-for-12 stealing bases in the DSL but may slow a bit as he fills out. He has the athleticism and solid arm strength to possibly stick at shortstop, and if he outgrows the position, he'd profile well at third base. He's bilingual and draws praise for his intelligence and charisma in addition to his tools.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Though he was eligible to turn pro a year earlier, Burrowes waited until he nearly had graduated from high school in Panama before signing with the White Sox for $75,000 in April. He joined the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League two months later at age 17 and has been the most impressive prospect on Chicago's club there. Other teams brought him up in trade talks this summer.

Burrowes offers intriguing offensive potential with his projectable 6-foot-2 frame and precocious hitting ability. He has an efficient right-handed stroke with good feel for the barrel and already shows some aptitude for recognizing pitches and managing the strike zone. He produces high exit velocities for his age and could develop 20-homer power once he adds strength and experience.

Presently an average runner with good instincts on the bases, Burrowes could lose a half-step as he matures physically. His athleticism and solid arm strength give him a chance to remain at shortstop. If he outgrows the position, he could profile well at second base, third or right field.
