Scouting Report

International

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Imagine a power-hitting center fielder roaming the outfield for your favorite big league team.

Now, picture the player as a teenager a few months away from becoming a professional athlete. The young and physical Calaz, who has tons of projection, has a chance to be that kind of player in the future.

Specifically, the teen has the potential to have plus raw power and be a plus runner if he continues to develop at a normal pace. The hit tool is still developing, but that's normal for a prospect his age. He's still putting all of his abilities together, which is also normal. There's just no denying his upside and overall potential.

Calaz trains at Academy Sanchez. The Rockies have shown interest in him.

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

There has been a bit of a pattern with Rockies young international hitters over the last few years, having early success at the lower levels, then struggling as they move up the ladder. There was hope that Calaz, who signed for $1.7 million in January 2023 and posted a 1.113 OPS across the rookie-level Dominican Summer and Arizona Complex Leagues in 2023 and 2024, would disrupt that trend, especially after he hit well in first taste of full-season ball at the end of the ‘24 season. But a return to Single-A Fresno in 2025 netted rougher results due to a lack of an approach and too much swing-and-miss.

Just 20 for all of the 2026 season, there’s still plenty of time for Calaz to figure things out at the plate. He’s a strong, right-handed hitter with a ton of raw power, but he needs to figure out a gameplan to stick with in order to get to it. He likes to attack pitches early in the count and showed he could still do damage if he got a pitch to hit in the first two or three offerings, but if he chased early and fell behind, he was done. He needs to learn he can have impact in all counts and cut down his chase because when he does connect, he still registers elite-level exit velocities.

While Calaz saw considerable time in center field at the outset of his career, he’s starting to slow down as he fills out his frame. He’s working on his conditioning and nutrition, but it’s looking like right field, where he saw a lot of time in 2025, is the best spot for him long-term. He has the power potential to profile there if he can find a bit more discipline at the plate.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

The Rockies have had their fair share of young prospects signed from the international market who make a big first impression at the lower levels of the system and then hit a bit of a stumbling block as they reach higher levels. So they’ve been trying to talk in more hushed tones about Calaz, who they signed for $1.7 million at the start of the 2023 signing period. But they’re having a hard time containing their enthusiasm after he posted a .984 OPS during his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League, then hit his way from the Arizona Complex League to full-season Fresno and finished with a combined .344/.446/.633 line last year.

That doesn’t mean Calaz -- who will play all of the 2025 season at age 19 -- is a finished product. Far from it, and what amazed the Rockies is that he managed to win the ACL Triple Crown without really having an idea of what he’s doing at the plate yet. Already strong and physical, Calaz hits the ball about as hard as anyone in the system, posting elite-level exit velocities, with tremendous raw power he’s still learning to tap into. He draws walks but still needs to tone down his swing tendencies as he is susceptible to breaking stuff away and out of the zone in particular.

The Rockies feel like Calaz is starting to show the makings of being a five-tool player and he’ll continue to get reps in center field. Most feel that his 6-foot-2 frame will continue to fill out and he’ll slow down more, necessitating a full-time move to right field, where his power production should profile perfectly.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Professional debuts in the Dominican Summer League following signing as an international free agent have to be taken with a grain of salt because the DSL tends to be very hitter-friendly. But it’s hard not to get excited about the tools Calaz used after signing with the Rockies for $1.7 million at the start of the 2023 signing period. The teenager put up a .325/.423/.561 line to whet everyone's appetite for his United States debut in 2024.

While many young players from the international market scream projection but lack present strength, Calaz is already very physical. The power was showing up a little bit during his debut, but that's just scratching the surface of unlocking his right-handed raw pop. He's developed the beginnings of a pretty good approach with a feel to hit, too, allaying some early concerns about his abilities to find the barrel consistently.

Calaz is still learning his body and how to use it efficiently, but he's an above-average runner and has the chance to stay in center field. A move to a corner could happen in the future if he slows down, but for now, the Rockies are mostly working with him on slowing the game down and helping him to learn about routines and preparations to maximize his very loud tools.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Calaz was ranked No. 24 on MLB Pipeline's Top 50 international prospects list when the 2023 signing period opened in January. His combination of speed and power intrigued many teams, most notably the Rockies, who made him the jewel of their signing class, inking the Dominican outfielder for $1.7 million, tops among the eight bonuses of six figures or higher. He provided an early return on the investment with a strong debut in the Dominican Summer League.

Strong and physical already, the 6-foot-2 right-handed hitter has the chance to be a truly impactful bat. There's plus raw power for him to continue to grow and tap into, though he was showing some ability to use it in the DSL out of the gate. While there was some question about his hit tool and overall approach as he was being evaluated, he’s done a nice job of drawing walks and limiting strikeouts, albeit in a small sample size.

A solid runner now, Calaz could have a chance to stick in center field if he can maintain his speed as he physically matures. If he slows down, as some expect, he could profile nicely in an outfield corner, with the power and run-producing abilities to fit there.
