Petit was a two-time All-Big South First Team selection at Charleston Southern, including as a junior starter in 2021 when he posted a 2.79 ERA in 84 frames. The Tigers selected him in the 14th round that summer and signed him for $125,000, making him the first Charleston Southern player drafted in three years. Petit immediately moved into a relief role in the pros and has remained there since. He spent all of 2024 with Double-A Erie, finishing with a 3.68 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 76 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings. His 31.1 percent K rate and 2.87 FIP were both 16th-best among 278 pitchers with at least 50 frames in the Minors’ second-highest level.

Standing at 6-foot-8, Petit would match Doug Fister for the tallest pitcher in Tigers history if he makes the big club. He doesn’t get big extension out of that frame, instead using his height to create a steep downward plane leading to a 50 percent ground-ball rate last season. There is some velocity here, touching 98 mph while sitting 94-96, and the Tigers have worked to generate a bit more heat from the righty. Petit’s 83-85 mph gyro slider is much better at generating swing-and-miss and chase low in the zone with strong depth, and his 86-89 mph changeup tunnels well enough off the fastball with just enough velocity separation.

Petit faced righties and lefties equally in 2024 and held the latter to a .179 average and .236 slugging percentage over 122 plate appearances. His walk rate creeped up, however, and he was left unprotected and unpicked in the Rule 5 Draft. Entering his age-25 season, the hulking hurler could still factor into A.J. Hinch’s bullpen plans with his split-proof arsenal.
