Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

There is no one path for prospects, even if they’re both outfielders and both signed at the same time. Case in point are Nelson Rada and De Jesus, who both received seven-figure bonuses in January 2022. Rada spent the 2024 season at Double-A with mixed results, while it’s taken De Jesus a longer period of time to find his footing. He’s moved one rung at a time, going from the Dominican Summer League to the Arizona Complex League and then to Single-A Inland Empire in 2024. He got off to a very good start there, then faded before rebounding at the end of the season to post an OPS north of .900 from Aug. 1 on.

It’s clear that the 6-foot-4 De Jesus has the raw tools to be an impact hitter. He’s got the projectable frame and he’s already added strength too. There were stretches during his full-season debut last year when his quality of contact and exit velocities were vastly improved. That let him get to his considerable raw power a bit more frequently, though he has to keep refining his approach, cutting down the strikeouts (29.3 percent K rate last year) and improving his on-base skills (just an 8 percent walk rate).

De Jesus moves pretty well for someone his size and has the makings of a solid defensive right fielder with a strong arm. For him to profile there as a big league regular, he’s going to have to keep getting to that power so he can be the kind of run producer teams want from that spot on the diamond.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The Angels gave seven-figure bonuses to a pair of outfielders at the start of the 2022 international signing period, giving $1.85 million to Nelson Rada, who has taken off and began the 2024 season in Double-A, and $1.2 million to De Jesus, who has taken a little longer to get his feet under him. After a solid enough debut in the Dominican Summer League after signing, he struggled to find consistent impact with a move to the United States in the Arizona Complex League in 2023. He appeared to be making a solid step forward, though, with a move to Single-A Inland Empire in 2024.

A 6-foot-4 right-handed hitter, De Jesus is a veritable tool box with plenty of projection, with size, strength and plus raw power to tap into. During his full-season debut in the California League, he had taken a jump in terms of quality of contact and consistently higher exit velocities, allowing him to get to his power more frequently. There’s still work to be done on his overall approach and cutting down on his swing-and-miss, which would help him maximize his offensive potential.

De Jesus’ plus arm strength could profile well in right field, the spot he’s settled into the most. If he can continue to make adjustments at the plate, he could eventually develop into an athletic run-producing power bat in a corner outfield spot.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The Angels pursued outfield talent aggressively when the 2022 international signing period opened that January, giving MLB Pipeline's Top 50 international prospects Nelson Rada $1.85 million and De Jesus $1.2 million. De Jesus had a solid debut in the Dominican Summer League, was named a midseason All-Star and finished with a respectable .272/.362/.467 line.

De Jesus has plenty of tools to dream on and took an encouraging early step forward in using them during his pro debut. The 6-foot-4 right-handed hitter has plenty of size and strength with plus raw power and the ability to make hard contact. He showed a pretty good approach at the plate in the DSL, keeping strikeouts to a relative minimum while getting to his power with 21 extra-base hits (seven homers) in 184 at-bats. He has a power-over-hit profile and will have to work on making adjustments so his big swing doesn’t get too long.

In addition to the power and run-production profile, De Jesus’ plus raw arm strength fits well in a corner outfield spot. He’s athletic and should be a solid enough defender, but it’s all going to be about how much he taps into that huge reservoir of power moving forward.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Ranked No. 38 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 50 international prospects list when the 2022 signing period opened, De Jesus was the second of two young outfielders to get a seven-figure bonus from the Angels. While Nelson Rada topped the list with his $1.85 million bonus, De Jesus wasn’t far behind, getting $1.2 million to sign out of the Dominican Republic.

While Rada is a hit-over-power type of outfielder, De Jesus might end up being the opposite. He can make hard contact with a solid approach, but it’s his emerging power that really stands out. In 2020, he worked on improving his conditioning, getting in better shape, losing some weight and adding strength to his impressive 6-foor-4 frame.

De Jesus is athletic and while he’s not a burner, is a smart and aggressive baserunner. He fits the athletic, power-hitting corner outfield profile well, especially if he continues to make enough contact to tap into his raw power.

De Jesus is a big and strong prospect that could play center field if needed but ultimately profiles as a corner outfielder. The teen also projects to be a middle of the order type of hitter if he continues to develop at a normal pace.

De Jesus makes lots of contact in games and shows flashes of his emerging plus power. He shows a good approach at the plate and has the ability to be a special hitter. He spent 2020 improving his physical conditioning, overall agility, and he has added strength to his frame.

An average defender, De Jesus shows an average arm with plus potential. He’s a smart base runner, but he’s not the fastest prospect. Scouts like his baseball IQ and attitude.

He trains with Manuel “Cabo” Ramon in the Dominican Republic. The Angels are the favorite to sign him.
