The Cibao region in the northern part of the Dominican Republic is among the most baseball-crazed on the globe. Medina, who has grown up with the game as a cornerstone of his life, has been playing with pro teams in his home country since he was 15 years old. Skilled enough to go up against elite-level talent in preparation of the Dominican Winter League, a recent growth spurt has elevated Medina’s overall profile.

A right-handed hitter, Medina stays short to the ball with a compact approach at the dish that features very little movement or drift in his hands. His frame – which is still growing – offers some power projection, but at present, he’s well-equipped to pepper the ball with top-tier exit velocities and the occasional ringing extra-base hit.

Coinciding with his growth spurt, Medina has gone from being a possible corner-infield type to emerging as a prototypical tall and rangy shortstop that has been in vogue for the past decade. He couples solid actions and footwork with a plus arm, giving him all the makings of seeing time at the position as he enters an organization’s farm system. Coupled with 60-yard dash times that have been clocked around 6.7-6.8, there’s optimism that Medina’s all-around package can blossom into an impact talent.

The Royals’ 2025 international class was loaded, featuring three of MLB Pipeline’s Top 50 international prospects. Ranked No. 49, Medina just clipped that list but entered pro ball with a lot of momentum stemming from a growth spurt entering the year. He signed for $947,500 out of the Dominican Republic, making him Kansas City’s second-highest signing of ’25 behind Warren Calcaño. Medina already has a Dominican Summer League All-Star selection on his professional resume after earning the honor with more walks than strikeouts in the international complex circuit.

Kansas City officials knew they’d like Medina most for his bat when he signed. He shows a compact approach as a right-handed hitter, and that allows him to stay direct to the ball with fewer strikeouts than many batters his age. He’ll elevate on contact, too, and his top-tier exit velocities allow evaluators to dream on the power still to come. That’s mostly to the gaps for now -- four of his first eight DSL extra-base hits were triples -- but he’ll get to the power even more as he continues to fill out.

There were concerns that Medina would end up at third base long term, thanks to his impressive arm strength, but for now, the Royals seem committed to seeing if he can stick at shortstop. He has decent enough footwork to make it work at this early stage with the corners always acting as a fallback option later in his career. The pieces are coming together for Medina to be a decently well-rounded player on the dirt.
