One of the last players signed in the Cubs' 2017-18 international class, Martinez landed a $300,000 bonus in May 2018. The Venezuelan handled the bat well in his pro debut that summer and has continued to impress after coming to the United States in 2019. Still just 18, he needed only five weeks to earn a promotion to the short-season Northwest League.
A switch-hitter, Martinez has a knack for making line-drive contact from both sides of the plate. He's equally proficient as a left-hander and a right-hander, and he already shows the ability to use the entire field and control the strike zone. He produces most of his present power as a lefty to his pull side, though club officials think he's a gifted hitter who could develop average pop as he gains more strength and experience.
Martinez has solid speed and uses it well on the bases and in the field. With his quickness and strong arm, he's equipped to play anywhere in the infield. He has split 2019 between shortstop and second base, and he also saw considerable action at third base during his debut.
