Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 60 | Cutter: 50 | Control: 35 | Overall: 40
Copen's 6.30 ERA in three seasons at Marshall belied his power and physicality, which the Dodgers liked enough to grab him in the seventh round of the 2023 Draft. A line drive struck him in the face and cost him the vision in his right eye in August 2024, but he returned for Opening Day last year. He ranked 12th in the Minors in strikeout rate (29 percent) and opponent average (.200) while splitting his year between High-A and Double-A.
After working with a 91-94 mph fastball during his final college season, Copen now operates at 95-98 mph and touches 100 with bat-missing carry. His high-spin mid-80s slider has so much depth that it's difficult to hit and even harder to land in the strike zone. He uses a low-90s cutter as his third pitch and threw just four changeups in 2025.
The 6-foot-6 Copen has a long arm action with a deep plunge in the back, and he has trouble keeping his long limbs in sync. He walked 13 percent of the batters he faced at Marshall and 15 percent his first three years as a pro. He may never harness his stuff well enough to make it as a starter, but his fastball and slider could make him a dynamic bullpen weapon.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Cutter: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45
Despite logging a 6.30 ERA in three seasons at Marshall, Copen intrigued the Dodgers with his power and physicality and went in the seventh round of the 2023 Draft. His first full pro season ended last August when a line drive struck him in the face, costing him the vision in his right eye, but he was able to open this year in High-A. He continues to display impressive stuff, though he still requires a lot more polish.
Copen touched 99 mph but worked at 91-94 with his fastball in his final college season, and he now operates at 95-97 mph with a four-seamer with a low release height and carry that make it even more difficult to hit. His mid-80s slider and low-90s cutter are plus offerings at their best and the latter tops out at 95 mph. He hasn't shown much feel for a mid-80s changeup with some fading action.
Because Copen works with a long arm action with a deep plunge in the back, he struggles to keep his delivery in sync. He has no history of throwing strikes and his walk rate has risen slightly since he turned pro. His stuff gives him the upside of a mid-rotation starter but his more realistic ceiling is likely as a late-inning reliever unless he dramatically improves his control.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Cutter: 55 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45
Though Copen recorded a 6.30 ERA in three seasons at Marshall, his power and physicality intrigued the Dodgers enough to select him in the seventh round of the 2023 Draft. After a brief pro debut, he overpowered Single-A hitters for the first two months of this season. Struggles following a promotion to High-A underscore his need for polish.
After touching 99 mph but operating at 91-94 with his fastball in college last year, Copen is sitting at 94-97 with a four-seamer this summer, and his low release height and carry make his even heater harder to hit. Both his upper-80s slider and tighter, harder cutter are plus offerings at their best. He's working on a mid-80s changeup with some fade.
Copen has a long arm action with a deep plunge in the back, which makes it difficult to keep his delivery in sync. He doesn't have a history of throwing strikes, though he doesn't have to be particularly fine with his power arsenal to find success. Los Angeles will continue to develop him as a starter but it's more likely that he becomes a late-inning reliever.
