Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Smith pitched at a Houston-area high school (Bellaire) and college (Rice) before the Astros selected him in the fourth round of the 2024 Draft. The Owls' top starter in his last two college seasons, he didn't make his pro debut until late May 2025 because of a back injury. He fashioned a 3.32 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings in Single-A.

While Smith doesn't miss a lot of bats with a low-90s sinker that can reach 96 mph, its movement yields a lot of harmless grounders. His best offering is a mid-80s changeup that grades as plus at its best but also has so much fade that he can struggle to land it near the zone at times. His low-80s slider stands out more for his ability to throw it for strikes than its sweep.

At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Smith is strong but also maxed out physically and unlikely to add much more velocity. His slingy, low three-quarters delivery adds life to his pitches without costing him control. He stands out more of his floor than his ceiling and projects as a back-of-the-rotation starter.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

The Astros used six of their eight picks on day two of the 2024 Draft on college right-handers, including Smith in the fourth round. A local product who played at a Houston-area high school (Bellaire) and college (Rice), he served as the Owls' No. 1 starter in his final two college seasons. He stands out more with his floor than his ceiling.

Smith's most effective pitch is his lively mid-80s changeup, which can be a plus pitch at its best but also can fade so much that he can struggle to land it for strikes. He shows the ability to get chases with all three of his pitches, including a 91-94 mph fastball that runs and sinks but can get hit when he doesn't command it well. The Astros hope to upgrade the consistency of his low-80s slider, which has sweeping action.

At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Smith has a durable frame and is maxed out physically. He provides plenty of strikes from a low three-quarters arm slot that creates deception. He does a better job of inducing grounders than missing bats, so he projects more as a back-of-the-rotation starter.
