Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 30 | Run: 40 | Arm: 65 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Perez turned pro for $250,000, earning the largest bonus given to a Dominican catcher on the 2019-20 international market. Because of the pandemic and two years in Rookie ball, he didn't reach full-season ball until 2023. He batted .299/.360/.393 between Single-A and High-A but tired noticeably down the stretch and wasn't protected on the 40-man roster in November.

One of the best contact hitters in the system, Perez laces balls to all fields with a compact right-handed stroke. He has enough strength and bat speed for at least 12-15 homer power, but his approach yields a lot of soft contact and he went deep just four times in 158 games over his first three seasons. He does make good swing decisions and controls the strike zone well.

Perez needs to clean up his defense after giving up 24 passed balls in 62 games a year ago, and he may never be more than an adequate receiver and blocker. He has well-above-average arm strength but can improve how quickly he gets rid of throws. Despite below-average speed, he managed to steal 23 bases in 27 attempts in just 75 games last season.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 30 | Run: 30 | Arm: 65 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Perez landed the highest bonus given to a Dominican-born catcher in the 2019-20 international class, turning pro for $250,000. The pandemic delayed his pro debut until 2021 and he spent his first two seasons in two different Rookie leagues. He made the jump to full-season ball at age 20 this year and has impressed with his bat-to-ball skills and arm strength.

One of the best contact hitters in the Giants' system, Perez has a quick, compact right-handed stroke. He makes advanced swing decisions for his age and prioritizes putting the ball in play over generating power. He does show the ability to turn on pitches but won't produce double-digit home run totals unless he gets stronger and drives more balls in the air.

Though he's a well-below-average runner, Perez moves well enough behind the plate. His plus arm strength helps him keep the running game in check and he has the hands to develop into an average receiver. He's still a work in progress defensively, especially in terms of his receiving and blocking skills.
