An inability to throw strikes limited Potter to 8 2/3 innings in two seasons at Crowder (Mo.) JC. He still battled the zone after transferring to Wichita State in 2025 but also established himself as one of the harder throwers in NCAA Division I. The Astros signed him for a below-slot $336,600 as a fifth-rounder and will have him make his pro debut in 2026.
Potter used his fastball three-quarters of his time with the Shockers, operating at 95-97 mph and reaching 100 with impressive carry. He complements his heater with a tight 82-85 mph slider that could become a solid offering if it adds more movement. He threw only a handful of cutters and changeups during three years in college, and Houston will look to expand his arsenal this season.
Potter works exclusively out of the stretch, with a big leg kick and a long arm action that help him generate power but hurt his ability to find the zone. He'll work as a tandem starter to get him regular innings to work on his arsenal and his control, but he projects as a two-pitch reliever. He'll need to add considerable polish to become a late-inning option.
