Scouting Report

The Lowe household was well represented in the 2016 Draft, with brothers Josh and Nate both going to the Rays. But while Josh may have been the more highly touted prospect and a first-round pick, it's been Nate, a 13th-round pick out of Mississippi State, who has had the better pro career. He followed a nondescript first full season with an absolutely massive breakout campaign in 2018, hitting .330/.416/.568 with 27 homers, 32 doubles and 102 RBIs as he ascended from Class A Advanced Charlotte to Triple-A Durham, earning a Futures Game selection along the way.

Behind improved bat speed and a looser, more athletic swing, Lowe showed that he could drive the ball over the fence to the biggest part of any park while still exhibiting a discerning eye at the plate. After profiling as more of a hit-over-power guy early in his career, the hulking left-handed hitter has learned how to tap into his plus-plus raw power and turn on the ball with consistency without it detracting from his impressive feel to hit and overall strong approach that nets him walks and fuels his on-base skills. Lowe's well-below-average speed limits him to first base, though he's a solid defender and makes all the routine plays.

Lowe's newfound power and dependable left-handed bat could go a long way in helping him become an everyday first baseman in the big leagues. A platoon role remains a possibility, although Lowe's improvement against same-sided pitching in 2018 suggests that he might be able to avoid such relegation.
