Marchán comes from a baseball family, with his father having played pro ball and his cousin, Rafael, in the Majors with Philadelphia. Regarded as having top-of-the-chart baseball IQ, the Venezuela native has blossomed into one of the premier backstops in this year’s class due to his all-around tool package. He trains with Carlos Azocar at VPA in Miranda, Venezuela, an MLB Trainer Partnership Program.
Marchán will spend all of his first professional year as a 17-year-old, which bodes well for his offensive development. Already equipped with at least average pop that has room to grow, he has a track record of performing well with the bat during game action. While his cousin didn’t rank among the Top 50 international prospects during his signing period in 2015, Moises and his 6-foot-1 frame make the mark due to the totality of his skill set.
It’s not often that catchers get popped with the “five-tool” label, but Marchán has already been clocked at 6.4 seconds on his 60-yard dash times, and his throwing arm is still regarded as his primary standout tool. He’s shown an ability to steal bases in game action and will be considered a long-term, surefire backstop as he joins the pro ball ranks.

Marchán is the cousin of Phillies catcher Rafael Marchán, and his father saw time in pro ball as well, so baseball certainly runs in the family. The Venezuela native checked in at No. 31 in MLB Pipeline’s international rankings for the 2025 and signed with the Royals for $802,500, giving him the third-highest bonus of the Kansas City class behind Warren Calcaño ($1,847,500) and Ramcell Medina ($947,500). Marchán has held his own in the Dominican Summer League in his first taste of the pros.
The 6-foot-1 backstop is a bit of a unicorn for the position. He was clocked at 6.4 seconds in 60-yard dash times, giving him at least plus wheels, and even if he slows down a tick from that, it’s still rare speed for a catcher. He’s swiped a few bags in his first taste of the Minors, and that’s a trend that could continue as his professional sample size expands. He also moves well behind the plate and has a strong throwing arm that he’s used to throw out 30.4 percent of attempted basestealers in the DSL.
Marchán won’t turn 18 until deep in the offseason and was still growing into his frame when he signed, giving hope that he could build more power as he matures physically. He’s been a league-average performer with the bat to this point, relying more on making contact than truly driving the ball, so the bat will deserve watching moving forward. But right now, he has an interesting foundational package for someone behind the plate.
