The Phillies rolled the dice in the 2022 Draft when they took Graves, a tall project of a high-school left-hander out of South Carolina, in the sixth round, and it’s looking like a gamble that could pay off. They slow-rolled him, with Graves not making his pro debut until 2023 in the Florida Complex League, and that didn’t go well. But a move to full-season ball in 2024 provided the first glimpse of what the future might look like, with a 31.8 percent strikeout rate over 84 innings with Clearwater as a 20-year old.
There are few players in the Phillies system who made more strides in one year than Graves did in 2024. The 6-foot-6 southpaw can attack hitters with as many as five pitches. He’ll throw both a four-seamer up in the zone and a two-seamer with sink in the 90-95 mph range, getting a lot of groundballs with the latter. He’s already added some strength, with room for more, so it’s easy to dream on him living more in the 93-95 mph range and holding it, making the fastball more playable. Graves can really spin a breaking ball, registering spin rates north of 3,000 rpm with his slider. He has a separate cutter, though the two pitches run into each other, both missing a ton of bats in the low-80s. His changeup took a nice step forward, killing spin with it.
Graves also improved dramatically in finding the strike zone, lowering his walk rate to 3.9 per nine in 2024. Continued work on his command, especially the secondary stuff, along with expected velocity gains, could allow him to keep evolving into a big league starter.

The Phillies' scouting department did a fantastic job identifying Graves as a projectable left-hander out of the South Carolina ranks, not only seeing there was more in the tank stuff-wise from his upper-80s fastball but that he also was ready to play pro ball, rather than head to Clemson. Selected in the sixth round of the 2022 Draft, Graves signed for slightly under slot to get going. His pro debut in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League the following summer was rough, especially in the control department, but a step forward in harnessing his rapidly improving stuff with Single-A Clearwater this year has put him on the map.
A 6-foot-6 southpaw, Graves has a five-pitch arsenal, and he’ll use all of them. He has both a four- and two-seam fastball, throwing the former up to 95 mph, mostly sitting in the 91-93 range, and the latter sinker around 90-93 mph, leading to good ground-ball rates. His cutter is his best out pitch, featuring hard, short break and high spin rates, thrown in the 78-81 mph range. His curve is more of a show-me pitch, as is his changeup, the pitch he throws the least.
After struggling with command during his debut, Graves filled up the zone with much greater consistency in 2024, cutting his walk rate considerably while continuing to miss a ton of bats. He pitched at age 20 for all of this season and it’s easy to dream on more upticks of stuff and further development in using his complete repertoire.
