In the top 10 rounds of the 2025 Draft, the Phillies took nine pitchers, eight of them from the college ranks. The lone hitter in the group was Ferrara, a high school shortstop from Toms River East High School in New Jersey. The athletic middle infielder had shown off some tools on the summer showcase circuit and turned in a strong season in the New Jersey Shore Conference. The Phillies had some bonus pool money to play with in the ninth round when they took Ferrara, who signed for an over-slot bonus close to $600,000, or fourth-round money.
The Phillies pushed the six-foot right-handed hitter to full-season Clearwater for a 15-game debut that did not go particularly well, though little should be read into thrusting an 18-year old kid from the Northeast into that level of competition. What was impressive was that even in the small sample, he was starting to make some small adjustments that should help him in the future. He wasn’t on time, launching his barrel too late, which led to poor barrel accuracy. When he got more synced up, his barrel accuracy and zone contact improved. He’s already added strength and physicality since signing, which could help him get to more impact.
While Ferrara only played second base during his debut, the Phillies think his athleticism gives him the chance to stick at short. He’s an easily plus runner with decent actions defensively. He’ll continue to see time on both sides of second base, and it’s not out of the question that he gets some run out in center field at some point in the future.
