Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Cutter: 65 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

A legitimate two-way player during his Mississippi high school days, Morris initially headed to college to both hit and pitch. He put down the bat after his freshman year in 2023 and struggled with his control over his first two seasons pitching out of Ole Miss’ bullpen. Things clicked more during his junior season, helping him land in the third round of the Draft to the Reds, who let him get his professional feet wet with Single-A Daytona. It was only a handful of innings, but he did toss three hitless frames in the playoffs to help catapult the Tortugas into the Florida State League Championship Series.

While the Rebels employed him almost exclusively as a reliever, the Reds believe he has every chance to start, and will allow him to develop as such. Moving his arm slot higher helped him find more velocity, with a fastball that topped out at 99 mph, albeit with more downhill plane than life, so it doesn’t miss that many bats. His best pitch, though, is his low-90s cutter that dives, a pitch that led to a 45 percent miss and 40 percent chase rate in college last year. He has an effective upper-80s slider with similar shape that can also miss bats.

Morris has a no-nonsense, super-competitive demeanor on the mound and showed in 2025 that he can find the strike zone consistently. He could use a changeup and some improved shape to his fastball, but he has the frame and other pitches to allow him to handle a starting workload.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Cutter: 65 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

Morris intrigued scouts with his power arm and bat as a Mississippi prepster, though his 2022 senior season ended prematurely when he punctured his liver in an outfield collision. He battled his control and command for most of his first two college seasons at Mississippi before finding more success this spring. While the Rebels used him almost exclusively as a reliever, the Reds could try him as a starter after taking him in the third round of the 2025 Draft.

Morris' best pitch is a low-90s cutter that dives at the plate, and hitters can't lay off it or make much contact against it. He also throws a solid upper-80s slider with similar shape, and while it's less devastating than his cutter, he does a better job of landing it for strikes. Raising his arm slot helped him add 4 mph to his fastball as a junior, and he now deals at 95-97 mph with a peak of 99.

The downside is that Morris' heater has more downhill plane than life and doesn't miss bats in the strike zone, so he'll have to improve its shape at the next level. To survive in a rotation, he'll also need to develop some sort of changeup and continue to refine his inconsistent strike throwing. His 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame is built to handle the increased workload if he becomes a starter.
