After showing the ability to command his fastball and miss bats with his secondary pitches as a freshman at Cloud County (Kan.) CC and a sophomore at Nebraska, McConnaughey positioned himself as an early-round pick in 2025. But his elbow gave out after three starts last spring and required Tommy John surgery in March. He still rated as the top prospect in the Cornhusker State and went in the fourth round to the Rangers, signing for a below-slot $495,825.

McConnaughey's fastball sits in the low 90s and peaks at 95 mph, though it plays up a bit because he can ride it up in the zone and sink it down at the knees. He can manipulate his low-80s slider, landing a tight version for strikes and getting chases by burying them in the dirt or sweeping them away from righties. He also has good feel for a tumbling 82-85 mph changeup that neutralizes left-handers.

McConnaughey has an easy, clean delivery that he repeats well, allowing him to place his pitches where he wants. Pitchers often throw harder after adding strength during the Tommy John rehab process, and adding more velocity to his present polish would raise his ceiling. Scouts praise his mound presence and work ethic.
