Vargas may have signed for only $17,500 out of Mexico in May 2022, but he hit the ground running in the Marlins system with a .319 average, .421 on-base percentage and .877 OPS in 53 games as a Dominican Summer League All-Star that season. He was again an on-base fiend in the Florida Complex League in 2023, and that was enough for the Mets to acquire him that July in a deal for David Robertson. Vargas got a little time at Single-A late in 2023 and was set to take on full-season ball for a longer stretch but was limited to only 37 games because of various bouts with wrist tendinitis.
The left-handed hitter slashed just .208/.369/.238 over 168 plate appearances in his age-19 season, but the wrist problems basically made that campaign a wash. When Vargas did play, he continued to display the advanced approach at the plate that excited New York officials in the first place, and his 20.2 percent walk rate was ninth-best among 499 Single-A hitters with at least 100 PA. His already below-average power was sapped by the wrist problem, and it didn’t exactly return during his run at High-A in 2025.
Vargas has fringy speed but has shown solid baserunning acumen to this early point in his career. He split his time between shortstop and second base in 2024 with some time at third mixed in, and he’s likely a better fit at second, where he could be above average if he sticks there. He might be best served as an OBP-driven middle-infield option off the bench.

Vargas signed with the Marlins for only $17,500 out of Mexico in May 2022 (the same month he turned 17) and instantly became of Miami’s best lower-level hitters, producing a .319/.423/.456 line over 53 games in the Dominican Summer League that helped become a league All-Star. Vargas kept producing stateside during his time in the Florida Complex League and joined the Mets in the David Robertson trade at the Trade Deadline. New York got the infielder time with Single-A St. Lucie before the year was out, and he finished 2023 with a .275/.432/.389 line with two homers, 53 walks and 38 strikeouts over 54 games.
The 6-foot left-handed slugger was the only Minor Leaguer aged 18 or younger who walked more than he struck out over 250 plate appearances or more, emphasizing how strong his approach and plate discipline were compared to his peers. If anything, Vargas may not have swung enough on pitches in the zone, leaving some potential hits on the table in favor of those walks. While his power value comes more in the gaps, he makes that profile work by distributing the ball almost evenly to the pull side, center and opposite way.
Vargas will swipe some bags with his fringy speed, but that’s more out of savvy than wheels. Both the Mets and Marlins have moved him around the dirt with time at short and third base, but he’s best fit for second where his actions and arm strength are a solid fit. He projects as a high-OBP-type who can play up the middle, while adding strength to his profile would make him an even more complete offensive threat.

His already below-average power was sapped by the wrist problem and getting healthy and comfortable with loud contact in the box will be a big priority for ’25.

New York’s infield situation remains crowded, but Vargas’ high-OBP profile remains one of the more intriguing in the system.

Vargas looks like the bargain of Miami's 2022 international class after signing for $17,500 out of Mexico the day before he turned 17 in May. Three weeks later, he reported to the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, where he recorded three multi-hit games in his first six pro contests. He batted .319/.423/.456 and won team MVP honors.
Vargas is an extremely advanced hitter for his age, showing the ability to recognize pitches, control the strike zone and employ the opposite field. With a quick left-handed stroke and good feel for the barrel, he makes a lot of hard line-drive contact. He already has a strong lower half and will focus on adding muscle to his upper body, which could help him produce 15-20 homers per season once he turns on and pull more pitches.
Though he possesses just fringy speed, Vargas is an instinctive base runner who looks to steal when given the opportunity. He shows good actions, average range and arm strength at second base, his best position. He spent much of his debut at third, where he made seven errors in 22 games compared to just one miscue in 23 contests up the middle at second and shortstop.
