Dinges dealt with a frightening bout with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) as a sophomore at Tallahassee Community College, and for the 2024 season, he transferred to Florida State, where he wore No. 43 for the total days of his hospital stays. He was an impressive performer as a DH with the Seminoles and the Brewers took him in the fourth round. He moved back to catcher in his first taste of the pros but still stood out most for his bat, hitting .300/.416/.514 with 13 homers in 77 games between Single-A and High-A. He was limited by hamstring issues during the regular season and a brief trip to the Arizona Fall League.

A right-handed slugger, Dinges displays big-time bat speed as he unleashes vicious cuts out of a straight-up stance. When he makes contact, it’s loud and generally in the air. The aggression in his hacks is always evident, and some evaluators have pause about the general length of his swing. Dinges struggled mightily against changeups, biting often against them while swinging over the top in his move to High-A, and more experienced pitchers could take advantage unless he finds a way to adjust. It’s more likely that Dinges’ ability to pound balls helps his average than his overall contact rate.

There was some thought out of the Draft that the 5-foot-11 backstop should just head to left field and focus on mashing, but he’s made some steady gains as a catcher. His plus arm strength is an obvious asset, and his issues with receiving and blocking might get better as he works with pitchers with better command. Entering ’26, Dinges is more raw than a typical 22-year-old and could push toward MLB starting catcher status with more time at and behind the plate.

Dinges survived a health scare during his sophomore year at Tallahassee Community College, one involving hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis or HLH, and recovered in time to transfer to Florida State for the 2024 season. (He wore 43 with the Seminoles as a nod to the amount of days he spent in hospitals.) He hit .323/.415/.583 with 15 homers, 38 walks and 37 strikeouts over 64 games while playing primarily at DH in his lone season with FSU, and the Brewers selected him in the fourth round that July. Dinges moved to catcher with Single-A Carolina to begin the ’25 season but didn’t last long, hitting .353/.500/.576 with a 14/21 K/BB ratio in 26 games before earning the bump to High-A Wisconsin in late May.

The right-handed slugger has absolutely vicious bat speed and can show an all-out swing. That’s led to some impressive exit velocities north of 110 mph in the early going of the pros, and it’s all-fields pop, too, with about a third of his batted balls going the other way. Because there is so much effort in his hacks, Dinges has proven susceptible to softer stuff in the early going, though it hasn’t affected his overall performance just yet. His Single-A domination wasn’t unprecedented, but the fact he carried that loud contact to Wisconsin too was encouraging before a left hamstring strain paused his progress in late June.

Dinges has been a pleasant surprise to evaluators who thought he might be rough behind the plate. He moves well enough and has a cannon of an arm, often using it to try to backpick opposing runners at the corners. But at 5-foot-11, he doesn’t make for the biggest target back there, and he might still profile best as a power-hitting corner outfielder.
