Heuer had some of the best physicality and projectable fastball velocity in the 2023 Draft, but he turned down the Guardians as a 16th-rounder to attend Texas Tech. He served as the Red Raiders' No. 1 starter and pushed his fastball to 98 mph last spring, but he also logged a 6.28 ERA as a Draft-eligible sophomore. That didn't deter the Yankees, who signed him for an over-slot $400,000 in the eighth round.

Heuer operates at 93-95 mph with cut and carry on his fastball, which is effective up in the zone but gets pounded when he doesn't command it well. His mid-80s slider with sweeping action can be a solid offering when it's on, though he has trouble landing it for strikes and it sometimes flattens over the heart of the plate. His mid-80s changeup with fade and depth was his most effective offering as a sophomore, though he didn't use it much.

Scouts don't love Heuer's delivery, which features a short arm action, high release point and some crossfire. He presently has fringy control and below-average command, which may make him more of a reliever than a starter in the long run. If he doesn't make it in baseball, he has his own livestock business with his brother and raised ewes that won grand champion titles at the 2020 and 2022 Georgia National Fairs.
